Chapter 6

The Royal Surge

The rebel leader descended from the balcony, walking slowly toward the extraction table. She looked down at Valen, her eyes filled with the desperate hunger of the dying.
"Initiate the extraction protocol," she ordered the medic standing beside the table. "Drain him entirely. We can synthesize the nanites from the marrow once the blood is gone."
The medic raised a heavy, mechanized centrifuge needle, positioning it over the primary vein in Valen’s neck.
Valen stared at the ceiling, his chest heaving, his lungs burning. He felt the life fading from Silas a few feet away. He felt the cold steel of the table against his spine.
He was a prince of the Ascendancy. He had been taught that his blood was sacred, that his life was worth more than the dirt-dwellers of the surface. He had been taught to protect the royal nanites at all costs.
But as he looked at Silas’s motionless body, Valen realized the truth. His royal blood was a curse. It was a cage that had kept him weak, a prize that had brought only suffering and death to the man he loved.
Valen didn't want to be a prince anymore.
A profound, desperate fury ignited within the core of his soul. It was a fire born of pure, unconditional love—a love so vast and heavy it eclipsed his fear of death.
"No," Valen whispered, his voice barely audible over the hum of the bunker’s generators.
He stopped fighting the toxic air. He stopped trying to breathe through the pain. Instead, he embraced it. He turned his focus inward, connecting with the microscopic, highly volatile royal nanites flowing through his veins.
He didn't order them to heal him. He ordered them to burn.
Valen intentionally overloaded his own bio-signature. He pushed the nanites into a catastrophic, cascading failure, forcing them to release all of their stored kinetic and electromagnetic energy at once.
The agony was indescribable. It felt as though his veins were filled with liquid fire. His body arched off the steel table against the heavy magnetic clamps, his mouth opening in a silent, agonizing scream.
A blinding, ethereal blue light began to radiate from beneath Valen’s pale skin. The veins in his neck and arms glowed like neon circuitry.
"What is he doing?" the rebel leader shouted, stepping back in alarm. "Extract him! Now!"
The medic lunged forward with the needle.
It was too late.
The overloaded royal nanites reached critical mass. Valen’s body acted as a living conduit, unleashing a massive, localized electromagnetic pulse.
A shockwave of crackling blue energy erupted from the extraction table.
The EMP surge hit the bunker like a tidal wave. The flickering red emergency lights exploded in a shower of sparks. The heavy surgical consoles fried, emitting plumes of acrid black smoke. The rebels' plasma rifles and cybernetics short-circuited instantly, rendering them useless pieces of dead metal.
Most importantly, the magnetic clamps binding Valen to the table lost power and disengaged.
The atrium was plunged into near-total darkness, illuminated only by the fading blue glow still pulsing faintly beneath Valen’s skin.
The rebels were screaming, panicked in the dark, their weapons dead.
Valen rolled off the extraction table, collapsing onto the hard ceramic floor. His body was entirely spent, broken, and agonizingly weak. The EMP had burned out almost every nanite in his system. He was dying, faster now than before.
But he didn't care. He had one thing left to do.
Ignoring the shouting rebels stumbling in the dark, Valen dragged his broken body across the floor. He crawled through the broken glass and pooled blood, his fingernails scraping against the tiles. Every inch was a battle against the crushing gravity and the burning toxicity in his lungs.
He reached Silas.
Silas was cold. His breathing had stopped.
"No," Valen wept, his tears falling onto Silas’s soot-stained face. "No, Silas. You promised. We survive together."
Valen hauled his upper body over Silas’s chest. He looked at the massive, fatal plasma burn over Silas’s heart.
Valen knew what he had to do. The nanites in his blood were volatile, designed to repair catastrophic tissue damage in royal subjects. If he pushed the remainder of his infected, overloaded blood into Silas, the nanites would interpret Silas’s dying body as their host and attempt to rebuild the damaged organs.
It would cure Silas. And it would completely purge the royal genetics from Valen’s body, leaving him utterly defenseless against the toxic air. It was a death sentence.
Valen didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He grabbed a discarded, shattered piece of glass from the floor. Without flinching, he dragged the jagged edge deeply across the palm of his own hand, opening a wide, bleeding gash. He then pressed his bleeding palm directly against the open, cauterized wound on Silas’s chest, pressing hard to force his blood into the torn vessels.
"Take it," Valen whispered, his voice trembling, leaning down to press his forehead against Silas’s cold cheek. "Take my blood. Take my life, Silas. Just live. Please, live."
