Chapter 5
The Ambush at the Obsidian Bunker
❧
Silas fought like a demon possessed.
He lunged behind the rusted treads of a massive sand-crawler, pulling Valen down with him as a hail of bullets sparked against the metal. Silas returned fire with lethal precision, dropping two more of Kaelen's men, but they were vastly outnumbered.
"Hold on to me!" Silas roared over the gunfire. He grabbed a heavy chain dangling from the crawler's maintenance winch and hit the release catch. The heavy metal hook swung out, smashing into a stack of volatile chemical barrels.
The barrels exploded, filling the hangar with blinding, acrid smoke and searing fire.
In the confusion, Silas grabbed Valen and sprinted toward the loading ramp of a prepped, armored transport vehicle. He threw the driver out, threw Valen into the passenger seat, and slammed the throttle forward. The transport tore out of the dreadnought's hangar, crashing through the rusted barricades and out into the freezing expanse of the Ash Dunes.
"Are you hurt?" Silas demanded, his eyes fixed on the rearview monitors, checking for pursuit.
"I am fine," Valen gasped, though his heart felt like it was going to beat its way out of his chest. "Silas, they know where we are going. The bunker is a trap."
"It's the only place with a clean room, Valen. Your nanites are failing. If we stay in the dunes, you'll be dead by tomorrow," Silas said, his voice grim. "We're going to the Obsidian Bunker. We're just going to have to kill whoever is holding it."
They drove through the night. Valen watched Silas, the rigid set of his jaw, the sheer, unrelenting determination in his amber eyes. Silas was driving them straight into a stronghold of rebels who wanted to harvest Valen’s blood, all because it was the only chance Valen had to breathe without pain. The guilt was a suffocating weight, heavier than the gravity that crushed him.
By dawn, the stark, black concrete entrance of the Obsidian Bunker rose from the ash like a tombstone.
Silas parked the transport out of sight behind a dune. He checked the ammunition in his magnum, reloading with cold, mechanical efficiency.
"Stay behind me," Silas instructed, helping Valen out of the transport. Valen could barely stand, leaning heavily on Silas’s arm.
They approached the massive steel doors of the bunker. The entrance was unguarded, an eerie silence hanging over the facility. Silas forced the manual override, and the heavy doors groaned open, revealing a dark, sterile corridor lit only by flickering, blood-red emergency lights.
It was a trap, and they both knew it.
They made it as far as the central medical atrium. Rows of empty extraction tables and surgical rigs gleamed in the red light.
"Drop the weapon, scavenger."
The voice echoed from the upper observation deck. Floodlights snapped on, blinding them. Dozens of heavily armed surface rebels poured into the atrium from the adjoining corridors, cutting off any chance of retreat.
Silas didn't drop his weapon. He stepped in front of Valen, shielding the frail prince with his own body, raising his magnum toward the rebel leader standing on the balcony.
"He needs the clean room," Silas snarled, his voice echoing in the vast chamber. "Let us in, and nobody has to die."
The rebel leader, a gaunt woman dying of radiation sickness, let out a hollow laugh. "He *is* the clean room. His blood is our salvation. Take the royal alive. Kill the mutt."
The atrium erupted in a deafening crescendo of violence.
Silas was a maestro of death, moving with terrifying speed and precision. He dropped five rebels before they could even draw a bead on him, pushing Valen behind a heavy surgical console. But there were simply too many of them.
Valen cowered behind the metal, his hands over his ears, weeping as he watched the man he loved fight an unwinnable war. Silas took a grazing shot to his shoulder, spinning with the impact, but he didn't stop firing. He was a force of nature, driven by pure, desperate love.
"Silas, behind you!" Valen screamed, his voice muffled by his mask.
A rebel had flanked them, raising a heavy plasma rifle. Silas turned, firing his magnum, but he was a fraction of a second too late.
The plasma bolt struck Silas squarely in the chest.
The impact lifted Silas off his feet, throwing him backward onto the cold ceramic floor. His magnum skittered away into the dark.
"NO!" Valen shrieked, a sound of absolute, soul-shattering agony.
He tried to scramble out from behind the console, his weak limbs trembling, but two rebels were already upon him. Rough hands grabbed his arms, dragging him to his feet. They tore the breather-mask from his face, ignoring his sudden, desperate gasps for the filtered air.
Valen fought them, thrashing with every ounce of his pathetic, frail strength, but it was like a child fighting a hurricane.
They dragged him to the center of the atrium, throwing him brutally onto a cold, steel extraction table. Heavy magnetic clamps snapped shut over his wrists and ankles. He was pinned, completely helpless.
Valen turned his head, his vision blurring as the toxic air of the bunker invaded his lungs, sending the royal nanites into a frenzy of agonizing pain.
Through the haze of his own suffering, he saw Silas.
Silas was lying on his back, a massive, smoking scorch mark across his chest. His breathing was shallow, wet, and labored. A pool of dark blood was spreading across the pristine white tiles. Silas turned his head slowly, his amber eyes locking onto Valen’s. Even dying, bleeding out on the cold floor, the only thing in Silas’s eyes was absolute, unconditional love, and a profound, heartbreaking apology that he had failed.
"I love you," Silas mouthed, his eyes fluttering shut as the life drained from him.
The dark moment settled over Valen, heavier than the earth, colder than the ash dunes. All hope was lost. The universe was a cruel, empty void. His weakness, his fragile, pathetic royal body, had finally killed the only beautiful thing in his miserable existence.
