Chapter 7
The Cure in the Blood
❧
The reaction was instantaneous.
As Valen’s glowing, nanite-infused blood entered Silas’s system, the wound on Silas’s chest began to hiss and steam. The microscopic machines, freed from Valen’s failing biology, aggressively attacked the damaged tissue in the scavenger’s heart and lungs.
Valen felt the heat leaving his own body. He felt the royal curse—the genetic programming that had made him a fragile prince of the stars—draining out of him, flowing into the man he loved.
The pain in his lungs was excruciating, but then, slowly, a strange sensation washed over him. As the last of the nanites left his bloodstream, the violent, agonizing war they had been fighting against the Earth’s atmosphere ceased.
Valen took a breath.
It was harsh, tasting of sulfur and ash, but the white-hot burning agony was gone. His body, stripped of its hyper-sensitive royal genetics, was rapidly adapting to the brutal reality of the surface world. He was no longer rejecting the earth.
He was becoming a part of it.
Beneath him, Silas let out a sudden, violent gasp.
Silas’s chest arched off the floor as his lungs expanded, pulling in massive quantities of air. The massive plasma burn on his chest was closing, new, scarred tissue knitting together at an accelerated, impossible rate.
Silas’s amber eyes snapped open in the dark.
He stared up at the ceiling, disoriented, his chest heaving. He felt the heavy, warm weight of someone resting across him. He looked down.
Valen was slumped over his chest, utterly exhausted, his hand still pressed against Silas’s healing wound.
"Valen?" Silas rasped, his voice rough. He sat up, pulling the prince into his arms, panic flaring in his chest as he remembered the gunfire, the pain, the extraction table. He checked Valen frantically, looking for bullet holes. "Valen, what happened? You're bleeding."
Valen weakly raised his head from Silas’s shoulder. He looked at the man he had brought back from the dead. Silas was whole. He was alive.
A slow, radiant smile spread across Valen’s pale face. He reached up, his bloody hand gently cupping Silas’s cheek.
"I healed you," Valen whispered, his voice stronger than it had ever been. "I gave it to you. The royal blood. It is gone."
Silas stared at him, the realization crashing over him. He looked at Valen’s chest. The prince was breathing steadily, deeply, without the breather-mask, without the agonizing spasms that had plagued him since the crash.
"You can breathe," Silas said, tears of absolute, overwhelming joy filling his amber eyes. "Valen... you can breathe."
"I am no longer a prince," Valen said softly, resting his forehead against Silas’s. "I am just a man. Your man."
Silas let out a choked sob, wrapping his arms around Valen with crushing, desperate relief, burying his face in Valen’s hair. He held him not as a fragile piece of glass to be protected, but as an equal, a survivor who had fought the apocalypse and won.
"I love you," Silas whispered fiercely against Valen’s skin. "I love you so damn much."
Around them, the rebels were beginning to recover from the EMP blast, shouting in the dark as they scrambled to find manual weapons.
Silas pulled back, his amber eyes hardening into the fierce gaze of the wasteland stalker. But this time, Valen didn't cower. Valen looked back at him, a new, unyielding strength burning in his own eyes.
Silas picked up his discarded magnum. He stood up, and for the first time, he didn't have to carry Valen.
He offered his hand. Valen took it, pulling himself to his feet. He felt the heavy crush of gravity, but his legs held firm. He was weak from exhaustion, but the fundamental, debilitating frailty was gone.
"Can you walk?" Silas asked, his thumb brushing over Valen’s knuckles.
"I can walk," Valen said, his fingers intertwining tightly with Silas’s. "Lead the way."
They didn't run. They walked together, side-by-side, through the dark corridors of the Obsidian Bunker. When the remaining rebels emerged from the shadows with rusted blades, Silas shot them with terrifying, protective precision, his free hand never letting go of Valen’s.
They reached the massive steel doors of the bunker. Silas forced the manual override wheel, and the heavy doors groaned open, revealing the dawn breaking over the Ash Dunes.
The bruised purple sky was giving way to a pale, golden light. The world was still broken. The ash still blew across the dead earth. It was a harsh, unforgiving wasteland that demanded blood and survival every single day.
But as Valen stepped out into the biting wind, taking a deep, painless breath of the raw earth, he looked at the man holding his hand.
He was no longer a weak prince of a fallen sky, and Silas was no longer a solitary scavenger in the dirt. They were two souls, tethered together in the ashes, ready to build a kingdom of their own.
They walked out into the light, together.
