Chapter 3

The Alpha Sync

Kira threw herself in front of the open doorway, her cybernetic arm raising instinctively. A hexagonal, shimmering blue energy shield projected from her forearm, absorbing the brunt of the plasma volley. The impacts hissed and cracked, sending showers of sparks raining down on the terrified pups.
"I can't hold this!" Kira shouted over the deafening roar of the gunfire. The energy shield flickered, the blue light stuttering as the generators in her arm whined in protest. "There are too many of them, Jax! We're pinned!"
Jax crouched behind the terminal console, plasma bolts scorching the chrome inches from his head. He drew his kinetic pistol, returning fire, but the rounds sparked harmlessly off the enforcers' heavy tactical armor.
They were trapped. The guilt that had haunted Jax for three years threatened to swallow him whole. He had let Kira talk him into this, and now they were going to die in a cage.
He looked at the pups. They were pressed together in a tight, shivering pile, the blue nodes on their temples flashing erratically in a panicked, unsynchronized rhythm.
* Pack-link cybernetics.* Kira’s words echoed in his mind. *A synchronized hive-mind.*
Jax looked down at the heavy neural-cable still coiled in his hand. He looked at the flashing blue nodes on the pups. It was a completely insane, suicidal idea. Interfacing a human brain directly into a feral, experimental animal hive-mind could fry his frontal lobe, reduce him to a drooling vegetable, or simply stop his heart.
But watching Kira's shield crack under a fresh wave of plasma fire, Jax realized he was done playing it safe. He was done letting his fear dictate his family's survival.
"Kira! Cover your ears!" Jax screamed.
He didn't wait for her to understand. Jax lunged across the open gap, diving into the cell with the pups. He grabbed the largest pup—the brave male with the yellow eyes—and swiftly jammed the universal jack of his neural-cable directly into the primary access port at the base of the pup's cybernetic spine.
With his other hand, Jax slammed the connector into the glowing ring at his own temple.
The connection hit him like a freight train.
A localized shockwave of pure, unadulterated sensory data exploded inside Jax’s mind. He tasted the sharp ozone of the plasma fire. He smelled the terror of the pack. He felt the cold steel under four paws, multiplied by five. For a terrifying, agonizing second, his human consciousness threatened to shatter under the weight of the feral, canine panic.
* Calm,* Jax commanded, projecting his will through the cable with all the brute-force hacking strength he possessed. *I am the Alpha. Listen to me.*
The erratic flashing of the pups' neural nodes instantly turned solid blue. The whimpering stopped. Five pairs of glowing eyes snapped up, locking onto Jax with absolute, synchronized focus. They were connected. He was their brain; they were his weapons.
Through the neural link, Jax accessed the pups' experimental hardware specs. He found a latent, untested defense mechanism buried deep in their cybernetics. An emergency energy purge.
* Now,* Jax commanded through the link. *Howl.*
The five pups threw their heads back simultaneously. They didn't produce a normal, biological sound. Instead, a terrifying, high-frequency digital screech tore from their throats.
The cybernetic ridges along their spines flared with blinding, white-hot intensity. A massive, localized Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) erupted from the pack in a violent, invisible shockwave.
The wave hit the Omni-Gen enforcers like a physical wall. The plasma rifles sparked and died instantly, the power cells shorting out. The tactical optics in the enforcers' helmets blew, plunging them into absolute blindness. Even the strobing red emergency lights of the Bio-Dungeon shattered, casting the sub-level into pitch darkness.
"Kira, go!" Jax roared, blood dripping from his nose as the strain of the neural link pushed his brain to the absolute limit.
Kira didn't hesitate. In the darkness, she was a terrifying force of nature. With the enforcers blind and their weapons dead, she tore into them. The heavy, metallic *CRACK* of her cybernetic arm breaking armor echoed through the blacked-out room.
The pups didn't stay behind. Moving as one perfectly synchronized unit, guided by Jax’s overriding command, the five small wolves lunged into the fray. They weren't large enough to kill, but they were fast, moving like glowing blue ghosts in the dark, tripping the heavy guards, biting at exposed joints, and creating absolute, terrifying chaos.
Jax staggered to his feet, his vision swimming, the world tilting precariously. He grabbed his kinetic pistol and fired blindly into the ceiling to keep the remaining guards suppressed.
"I've got you!" Kira yelled, suddenly at his side. She threw his arm over her shoulder. The five glowing pups flanked them, forming a tight, protective perimeter as Kira dragged her half-conscious cousin toward the manual override of the blast doors.
They fought their way through the darkness, leaving a trail of unconscious, groaning corporate enforcers in their wake, pushing upward toward the surface.
