The Bio-Dungeon

The Omni-Gen Bio-Dungeon was exactly as horrific as the rumors suggested. Located eighty levels beneath the city surface, it was a sterile nightmare of cold chrome walls, humming laser grids, and the suffocating scent of ozone and synthetic antiseptic.
The infiltration, however, went flawlessly. Jax’s fingers flew across his holographic interface, dancing through the corporate firewalls with a speed he hadn't tapped into in years. He sliced the perimeter cameras, looped the visual feeds, and disabled the automated turrets. Whenever a synthetic guard patrolled too close, Kira emerged from the shadows like a coiled spring. Her cybernetic arm delivered silent, bone-shattering blows that short-circuited the droids before they could broadcast an alarm.
They descended deeper into the earth, finally breaching the reinforced doors of Sub-Level 9.
The holding room was vast and agonizingly bright. In the center of the room sat a massive, reinforced containment cell.
Jax and Kira crept to the edge of the glass. Inside, huddled together on a cold metal grate, was the litter. Five timber wolf pups. They were covered in thick, fluffy gray fur, but running along their spines were intricate, glowing blue cybernetic ridges. Small metallic nodes were grafted to their temples, pulsing in sync with one another. They were terrified, whimpering softly, their oversized paws slipping on the sterile floor.
"Look at them," Kira whispered, her voice breaking. She pressed her human hand against the glass. The largest of the pups, a brave little male with bright yellow eyes, trotted forward and sniffed the glass where her hand rested.
"Stand back," Jax said, pulling a heavy decryption spike from his jacket. "I'm going to crack the magnetic locks."
He slammed the spike into the cell's terminal. Lines of green code cascaded across his retinas as his neural-port interfaced with the dungeon's localized network. The locks cycled heavily. *Click. Clack.*
The heavy glass door hissed open.
Kira immediately dropped to her knees, holding her hands out. The pups, sensing her lack of hostility, swarmed her. They were a tumbling mass of fur and glowing tech, licking her face and whining with desperate relief.
Jax smiled, the heavy knot of anxiety in his chest finally beginning to loosen. They had done it. They were actually going to pull this off.
Suddenly, his data-pad burned a blinding, furious red.
"Jax?" Kira asked, looking up as the sterile white lights of the sub-level instantly plunged into a strobing, aggressive crimson.
* WARNING: BLACK-ICE DEPLOYED. INTRUSION DETECTED. INITIATING TOTAL LOCKDOWN.*
"It was a silent trigger," Jax yelled, ripping the decryption spike out of the terminal. "The physical lock was tied directly to a biometric sensor array. They know we're here!"
Heavy blast doors slammed shut across the only exit. The grinding of gears echoed through the cavernous room, followed by the terrifying, synchronized thud of heavy combat boots.
From the far end of the sub-level, a squad of Omni-Gen corporate enforcers poured into the room. They wore heavy, ballistic armor and carried rapid-fire plasma rifles.
"Target acquired," the lead enforcer barked through a digitized helmet speaker. "Lethal force authorized. Secure the assets."
"Get down!" Kira roared, grabbing three of the pups and shoving them behind the thick steel frame of the open cell door.
A hail of blinding blue plasma fire erupted across the room.
