Chapter 3

The Scent of Stardust

Nova was pressed flat against the bulkhead, her hand clamped over the bleeding gash on her arm. Her heart was beating so fast she felt dizzy.
Valerius locked eyes with her. His irises were a furious, blazing red. The scent of her spilled blood was pooling in the narrow corridor, singing a siren song to his ancient, vampiric instincts. He let out a low, guttural hiss that vibrated in Nova’s chest, his fangs fully extended.
He stalked toward her. Every step was slow, deliberate, and impossibly dangerous. He looked feral, completely lost to the predatory hunger of his species.
Nova knew she should run. She knew she was facing a creature capable of draining her life in a single heartbeat. But as he loomed over her, trapping her against the wall, she looked up into his crimson eyes and realized something profound.
She wasn't afraid of him. She was only afraid of never truly mattering to him.
He leaned in close, his cold breath ghosting over the curve of her neck. He was trembling, fighting a colossal, agonizing war against his own biology. He hovered millimeters from her pulse point, caught in the intoxicating gravity of her blood.
Nova didn't cower. Gathering every ounce of her courage, she lifted her uninjured arm. Her warm, trembling hand reached up, her fingers gently brushing against his cold, marble-like cheek.
Valerius flinched at the contact, a sharp intake of breath hissing through his fangs.
"I know I'm just a human," Nova whispered, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes, her voice breaking the heavy silence of the corridor. "I know I'm a blink in time, Valerius. I hate it. I hate that I'm so fragile, and I hate that I'll die while you look exactly like this forever. But I'm not afraid of you."
Her vulnerability, and the soft, grounding warmth of her touch, hit him harder than any physical blow.
Valerius closed his eyes, leaning his cheek heavily into her palm. A violent shudder ripped through his massive frame. When he opened his eyes again, the feral crimson was rapidly draining away, replaced by the deep, profound silver she knew so well. The beast had receded, tamed by the sheer gravity of her confession.
"You think you are a blink, Nova?" Valerius breathed, his voice a ragged, desperate rasp. He reached up, his large, cold hands gently framing her face. "To me, you are a supernova. You burn brighter than any star in the Umbra Nebula."
