The Ambush

Hours later, the artificial day-cycle of the station shifted to a dim, twilight setting. Nova was exhausted. Desperate to avoid the crowded upper promenades, she took a shortcut through the Lower Sector Corridors.
This section of the station was industrial and unforgiving. Thick bundles of power cables lined the low ceilings, and the deafening, rhythmic thrum of the environmental scrubbers drowned out the sound of her footsteps. The lighting panels flickered, casting long, erratic shadows against the rusted bulkheads. The surveillance cameras down here were notoriously broken.
It was the perfect place for an ambush.
Nova barely had time to register the shifting shadows before a hand grabbed her shoulder, spinning her violently around.
"Did you think that was funny, little human?" Kaelen hissed, his golden face twisted into an ugly snarl of bruised ego.
He had brought four others with him this time. They corralled her against the heavy, riveted metal of a localized airlock. The humiliation of retreating from Valerius had clearly festered, and they were looking for a weak target to project their shame onto.
"I didn't do anything," Nova gasped, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs as she backed up against the cold metal.
"You looked at us like you had won," Kaelen snarled, stepping into her personal space. "You hid behind a Sanguinarian monster. Let’s see him save you down here."
He shoved her. Hard.
Nova flew backward, her shoulder colliding with the bulkhead. A jagged, exposed piece of metal from a broken comms panel sliced cleanly through the fabric of her academy uniform and deep into her upper arm.
She cried out, collapsing to her knees. Bright, crimson human blood instantly welled from the deep laceration, dripping down her skin and splashing onto the grated metal floor.
The sharp, coppery scent of human blood hit the stale, recycled air of the corridor.
Kaelen laughed, stepping forward to kick her. "Pathetic. You bleed just by—"
A sound like a thunderclap echoed through the narrow corridor. The heavy steel grating of the overhead maintenance shaft was violently ripped from its hinges, crashing to the floor.
* THUD.*
Valerius dropped from the ceiling, landing in a predatory crouch between Nova and the bullies.
He was no longer the aloof, aristocratic student from the arboretum. He was a nightmare unleashed. His silver eyes had bled into a terrifying, luminescent crimson. The fangs of a Sanguinarian apex predator had descended, gleaming stark white against his pale lips. The sheer, suffocating gravity of his bloodlust compressed the air in the corridor, making it difficult to breathe.
Kaelen didn't even have time to scream.
Valerius moved faster than the human eye could track. He grabbed the Solarian by the throat, hoisting him entirely off the ground with one arm, and hurled him thirty feet down the corridor. Kaelen slammed into a stanchion with a sickening crunch, slumping unconscious to the floor.
The other bullies broke and ran, shrieking in absolute, primal terror as the immortal vampire tore through their ranks. Valerius incapacitated them with vicious, calculated strikes, breaking bones and shattering their arrogant pride in a matter of seconds. He was a force of lethal, unstoppable nature, driven by an instinct so dark and violent it made the metal walls tremble.
Within moments, the corridor was silent, save for the groans of the fleeing elite students dragging themselves away into the darkness.
Valerius stood amidst the wreckage, his chest heaving. His hands, tipped with razor-sharp claws, were stained with the bruised purple blood of the alien elites.
But then, he turned around.
