Chapter 5

The Valentine Spire

The Valentine Spire was a monument to excess and genetic supremacy.
The massive ballroom was draped in crimson silk and illuminated by thousands of floating, bioluminescent orbs. Classical music, synthesized to perfect mathematical precision, swelled over the low hum of conversation. The room was filled with the elite of Neo-Angeles—Alpha-Primes in their dress uniforms, and their state-assigned mates adorned in jewels and flowing gowns.
Sera stood near a towering crystal pillar, holding a flute of champagne she couldn't stomach. She wore a backless gown of deep crimson, her hair swept up in an intricate braid. She looked the part of the perfect, submissive mate, but beneath the silk, her heart was hammering a frantic, terrifying rhythm against her ribs.
Jaxen stood beside her, a magnificent, terrifying figure in his formal white and silver Commander’s uniform. His presence demanded absolute respect, and the other Alphas gave him a wide berth. He was the perfect shield.
"One hour," Jaxen murmured, his lips barely moving as he surveyed the room, his hand resting possessively on the small of her back. "The hangar is prepped. The trunks are secure in our transport below. Keep smiling, my love."
Sera forced a smile, nodding at a passing Councilwoman. "I feel sick, Jaxen. There are too many Enforcers here."
"They are my men. They answer to me. Breathe."
But the illusion of safety shattered less than ten minutes later.
Approaching them through the sea of crimson and silver was Commander Vane. Vane was a rival Alpha-Prime, a man whose ambition was matched only by his cruelty. He had always coveted Jaxen’s position as head of the Seventh Legion, and he looked at Sera not as a woman, but as a biological asset he wished he owned.
Vane stopped before them, offering a mockingly deep bow. "Commander Jaxen. Dr. Vance. You both look exceptionally pure tonight."
"Vane," Jaxen acknowledged coldly, his posture stiffening, the Alpha instinct immediately identifying a threat.
Vane’s pale eyes slid from Jaxen to Sera, lingering on her stomach for a fraction of a second too long. "It is a tragedy we haven't seen you at the Ministry clinics recently, Doctor. I was reviewing the anomaly reports today. A fascinating thing, data. It tells a story, if you know how to read the gaps."
Sera’s blood turned to ice. She gripped her champagne flute so tightly the crystal threatened to snap.
"My mate's medical history is classified, Vane," Jaxen growled, stepping slightly in front of Sera, a physical barrier between her and the rival Alpha.
"Of course it is," Vane smiled, a thin, venomous stretching of his lips. "But I couldn't help but notice a discrepancy in the energy consumption logs from the Sub-Level sectors. A massive draw of power, routed through a derelict clinic. Right around the time Dr. Vance here... lost her pregnancy."
He knew. He didn't know exactly what was in the clinic, but he knew she had lied. He was hunting for treason to destroy Jaxen’s career.
"You are overstepping your bounds, Commander," Jaxen said, his voice dropping to a lethal, quiet register. His hand drifted casually toward the ceremonial blaster at his hip.
"Am I?" Vane chuckled softly. "We shall see. I forwarded the anomaly logs to the High Inquisitor an hour ago. They are running a deep-dive on Dr. Vance’s biometric history right now. Enjoy the Gala, Jaxen. It might be your last."
Vane turned and melted back into the crowd.
Sera swayed on her feet, the room spinning violently. Jaxen caught her arm, his grip bruising.
"We leave. Now," Jaxen ordered, his voice tight.
He didn't wait for her to respond. He grabbed her hand and began pulling her toward the grand exit doors at the rear of the ballroom. They moved quickly, abandoning the pretense of casual strolling.
They were halfway across the crimson floor when the music abruptly cut out.
The floating bioluminescent orbs instantly shifted from a warm gold to a harsh, strobing, blood-red. A deafening, mechanized siren screamed through the Spire, vibrating the crystal pillars.
*"ALERT. TREASON DETECTED. SEVENTH LEGION COMMANDER COMPROMISED. BIOLOGICAL ANOMALY CONFIRMED. INITIATING GALA LOCKDOWN."*
Heavy, blast-proof steel shutters slammed down over the massive windows and the exit doors, sealing the ballroom. The crowd of elites erupted into panicked murmurs, backing away from Jaxen and Sera as if they were suddenly radioactive.
From the side entrances, dozens of heavily armed Enforcers flooded the room. But they were not Jaxen’s men. They wore the crimson insignia of the Inquisitor’s Guard.
"Jaxen," Sera sobbed, clinging to his arm as the armed guards formed a perimeter around them, dozens of laser sights painting their chests.
Jaxen stood tall, pushing Sera behind his massive frame. He drew his ceremonial blaster, though it was pathetically inadequate against the heavy assault rifles of the Inquisitor’s Guard.
The crowd parted, and Commander Vane stepped forward, escorted by the High Inquisitor. Vane held a holographic datapad, his face twisted in a triumphant, cruel sneer.
"Well, well," Vane announced, his voice echoing in the silent, terrified ballroom. "It seems my suspicions were correct. A raid on the Spire's subterranean parking garage has just concluded. We found your transport, Jaxen. And we found the trunks."
Sera let out a raw, agonizing scream, her knees buckling. Jaxen caught her, hauling her up, his face a mask of pure, unadulterated devastation.
"Three unregistered, naturally conceived biological anomalies," Vane continued, shaking his head in mock sorrow. "A vile mutation. And you, Alpha-Prime, were attempting to smuggle this filth out of our pure city. Treason of the highest order."
"They are my children!" Jaxen roared, a sound so loud, so filled with primal, unconditioned rage and despair that several of the Enforcers actually took a step back. "If you touch them, Vane, I will tear you apart!"
"They are property of the State now," the High Inquisitor stated coldly. "To be studied, dismantled, and utilized for genetic research. As for you, Commander... execute him."
