Chapter 4

The Treasonous Pact

The next twenty hours were a masterclass in tactical treason.
Jaxen did not sleep. He converted the Apex Penthouse into a war room. He utilized his high-clearance terminal to access the Ministry’s central grid, mapping the exact patrol routes for his own men in Sector 4. He manipulated the deployment algorithms, subtly shifting the Enforcer sweeps away from Corvus’s clinic, creating a three-block blind spot.
Sera watched him work with a mixture of profound love and mounting terror. Jaxen was dismantling his entire life, burning down the only world he had ever known, without a second of hesitation.
"The smuggler’s skiff is too risky," Jaxen declared, tracing a holographic map of the city suspended over the dining table. "The radiation shielding is unreliable. If a patrol drone registers three unauthorized heartbeats, you'll be shot out of the sky before you clear the outer wall."
"Then how do we get them out?" Sera asked, pacing the floor.
Jaxen looked up, his eyes locking onto the towering, opulent hologram of the Valentine Spire glowing in the distance.
"Tomorrow night is the opening Gala of the Valentine Cycle," Jaxen said smoothly. "Every high-ranking Ministry official will be in attendance. The airspace around the Spire will be locked down for security, but the private hangar bays beneath the tower will be filled with the personal atmospheric yachts of the High Council. Vessels with military-grade cloaking and deep-space capabilities."
Sera stared at him, horrified. "You want to steal a High Council yacht? From the Valentine Spire? Jaxen, that's suicide. The Spire is a fortress."
"It is a fortress that I command the security for," Jaxen corrected, a dangerous, arrogant smirk playing on his lips. "We will attend the Gala. We will wear our finery and play the perfect, loyal couple for the cameras. While the High Council is distracted by the genetic audits, I will use my commander override to secure a yacht in Hangar Bay 4."
"And the babies?"
"I have already dispatched a trusted, off-the-books courier to Corvus," Jaxen replied. "The stasis pods are being transferred into heavily shielded, high-end luggage trunks. They will be loaded into our personal transport vehicle under the guise of our Gala wardrobe. They will be waiting in the parking subterranean levels of the Spire."
The audacity of the plan was staggering. They were going to hide their illegal children in the very basement of the Ministry’s most sacred event, steal a ship from the ruling class, and fly off-world under the cover of the Gala.
"It's madness," Sera breathed.
"It is the only way," Jaxen said, stepping around the table and taking her hands. "We endure the Gala for two hours. We smile. We drink the wine. Then, we walk to the elevators, descend to the hangar, load the trunks, and we disappear."
He lifted her hands, kissing her knuckles with a fierce, unwavering devotion. "We will be a family, Sera. In the free colonies. Where they can grow under a real sun."
Sera looked into his eyes, seeing the beautiful, impossible future he was painting. She wanted it so badly it physically ached. "Okay," she whispered. "Okay."
