Chapter 8
The Epilogue
❧
The Sterling Penthouse was a masterpiece of modern design. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic, God’s-eye view of the Seattle skyline, the city glittering like scattered diamonds far below. The air was perfectly climate-controlled, smelling faintly of expensive sandalwood and fresh white lilies.
Clara Sterling sat gracefully on the edge of a white leather sofa, holding a delicate porcelain teacup.
She was dressed flawlessly in a tailored silk blouse and an immaculate pencil skirt. Not a single strand of her dark hair was out of place. She stared out the window, watching the rain streak the glass.
Her eyes were utterly, terrifyingly blank.
They were clear and bright, but the spark of defiance, the anxious energy that used to make her bite her nails or pace the floors, was gone. She was entirely docile. A perfect, hollow vessel.
She didn't remember the mist. She didn't remember the ashram, or the frantic run through the woods, or the terrifying weight of the obsidian cavern. She didn't remember the centuries of burning, coughing, and bleeding.
She only knew that she belonged here. She only knew a profound, quiet emptiness that felt comfortably like peace.
The private elevator dinged softly. The polished steel doors slid open, and Julian stepped into the penthouse. He handed his overcoat to a waiting assistant, unbuttoning his suit jacket as he walked into the living room.
He looked at Clara, and a slow, deeply satisfied smile spread across his handsome face.
Clara set her teacup down on the glass table. She didn't flinch. She didn't feel a phantom pain in her throat. She simply looked up at him with mild, pleasant obedience.
Julian walked over and sat beside her. He reached out, his warm, strong hand gently cupping the side of her face. He looked deep into her empty eyes, seeing his own ancient reflection staring back from the void where her soul used to be.
The cycle was closed. The hunt was over. She was his, entirely and eternally, a prisoner in her own flesh.
He leaned forward and pressed a gentle, loving kiss to her forehead.
“Welcome home, my love,” Julian whispered.
Clara offered him a perfect, hollow smile. “It’s good to be home, Julian.”
