Chapter 4
The Hollow City
❧
Clara didn't scream. The grief was too massive, too instantaneous to process. It swallowed her whole, leaving only the singular, biological imperative to protect the child in her arms.
She ran. Down forty more flights of stairs in a blind, silent hysteria. Her legs went numb. Her vision tunneled. She didn't feel the burning in her chest or the tears freezing on her face. She just moved, driven by the echoes of Julian’s final command.
She hit the ground floor lobby, bursting through the emergency exit doors. The lobby was desolate, the security guards absent, the grand glass doors leading to the street standing open, letting the rain blow inside.
Clara sprinted through the lobby and out into the chaotic, neon-lit metropolis. The cold city rain immediately soaked through her clothes. The noise of traffic, sirens, and distant thunder was a cacophony of normal, human life.
She collapsed onto the wet pavement under the glow of a streetlamp, her knees finally giving out. She scrambled backward, pressing her back against the wet concrete of a building, shielding Mia from the elements.
"We made it," Clara gasped, rocking back and forth, the shock causing her body to tremble violently. "We're safe, baby. Mommy's got you. We're safe."
Julian was gone. The only man she had ever trusted, the architect of her sanctuary, was dead. But she had Mia. She had saved the pure light.
Clara pulled the wet blanket back from Mia’s face to kiss her forehead.
She stopped. The air around her seemed to vanish.
Mia’s chest was not glowing.
The profound, ethereal golden light that had always radiated from beneath her daughter's skin was entirely extinguished. Clara’s trembling hands touched the little girl’s cheek. It was freezing cold.
Slowly, Mia opened her eyes. They were not her beautiful, innocent blue.
They were pitch black—voids of infinite nothingness.
A sliver of shadow, a whisper of the swarm, had slipped past Julian in the chaos of the stairwell. Clara stared down at the empty, corrupted shell of her daughter, the realization crashing down on her like a physical weight. Julian was dead. Mia’s soul was gone.
Clara sat on the wet pavement in the heart of the bustling, indifferent city, her perfect life permanently destroyed, absolutely and entirely alone.
