Chapter 3
The Descent
❧
The emergency stairwell was a claustrophobic, concrete cylinder of echoing panic. The fluorescent emergency lights flickered violently above them, casting long, deceiving shadows on the cinderblock walls.
Clara ran, her lungs burning, her arms aching from the dead weight of her sleeping daughter. Mia’s head rested on Clara’s shoulder, oblivious to the nightmare unfolding around them. Julian led the way, taking the stairs two at a time, his hands glowing faintly with that terrifying, dark energy, preemptively clearing the path of any stray entities.
* Seventy floors. Sixty floors. Fifty floors.*
The descent was a grueling, agonizing blur. Blisters ruptured on Clara's heels. Every breath tasted of copper and dust. The illusion of safety she had harbored her entire adult life had been stripped away, leaving only raw, primal terror. She kept her eyes fixed on Julian’s back—the monster she had married, the man she desperately loved, their only hope of survival.
As they reached the landing of the fortieth floor, a deafening crack echoed through the shaft.
The concrete wall beneath the "40" placard violently bowed inward. The structural rebar groaned. Suddenly, the wall ruptured. A torrent of freezing, black ooze exploded into the stairwell, immediately taking the shape of dozens of elongated, faceless entities. The temperature plummeted. Frost coated the metal handrails instantly.
Julian staggered back as the entities lunged, using a shield of dark magic to deflect them, but the sheer force pushed him toward the edge of the stairs. More shadows were pouring through the breach, a relentless tide of starvation.
"Julian!" Clara screamed, stopping on the stairs above him, clutching Mia.
Julian looked up at the breach, then back down the shaft, realizing the horrible math of their situation. The stairwell was compromised. The swarm was too thick. They would never outrun them together.
His eyes met Clara's. The warm hazel was gone, replaced by the terrifying, infinite black of the void. But the sorrow in his expression was entirely, heartbreakingly human.
"Julian, no!" Clara shrieked, recognizing the fatal resignation in his posture. "We do this together! You promised you would never leave me!"
"I am so sorry, my love," Julian yelled over the screeching of the shadows. He turned away from her, facing the breach. He raised both hands, and the shadows in the stairwell seemed to gravitate toward him, drawn by the sudden, massive expenditure of dark magic.
"Take her and run!" Julian roared, his voice distorting into something monstrous and powerful as he held the tide back with his own corrupted soul. "Don't look back! Run!"
A wall of black magic erupted between Julian and the stairs leading down, sealing the entities away, but sealing him on the other side of the slaughter. The heavy fire door on the landing slammed shut with a final, echoing boom.
