Chapter 5

The Siren's Bargain

That night, a violent storm raged off the coast. The wind howled against the stone walls of Somerset House, and the rain lashed against the windows in blinding sheets.
Elara did not care. Driven by sheer, hysterical desperation, she threw a heavy velvet cloak over her nightgown and fled into the tempest.
The cliffside stairs were treacherous, slick with rain and mud, but she climbed down blindly, her hands scraped and bleeding from the jagged rocks. When she reached the cove, the waves were monstrous, crashing violently against the shore.
"Caspian!" she screamed into the wind, her voice tearing.
He emerged immediately, his form cutting through the violent surf like a blade. He caught her as she collapsed onto the wet sand, wrapping his cold arms around her trembling body.
"What is it? Who hurt you?" he demanded, his melodic voice edged with a terrifying, protective fury. The storm around them seemed to intensify with his anger.
"I'm pregnant," Elara sobbed, burying her face in his wet chest. "I have his heir. They will never let me go, Caspian. They will lock me away forever. You have to take me away. Please. Take me into the water. Let me live with you."
Caspian went very still. His black eyes searched her panicked face, an unreadable emotion flickering in the depths of his gaze. Slowly, he stroked her wet, tangled hair.
"My sweet Elara," he murmured, his voice laced with a profound, aching sadness. "You know I would give you the ocean if I could. But I am bound to this cove. An ancient curse tethers me to these shores. I cannot leave, and I cannot take a mortal permanently into my kingdom while the magic binds me."
"Then break it!" she pleaded, gripping his shoulders. "Tell me how to break it!"
Caspian pulled back slightly, his expression somber. "The curse was forged by royal blood centuries ago. It can only be broken by royal blood. To shatter the chains that hold me, to allow us to be free and build a kingdom together... the sea demands a sacrifice."
Elara froze, her breath catching. "A sacrifice?"
"The Crown Prince," Caspian whispered, the words slipping into her mind like sweet, deadly poison. "Your cruel, unfaithful husband. If he breathes his last breath in these waters, his royal blood will wash away my curse. We will be free, Elara. Both of us. No more cages. No more pain. Only you, me, and our endless kingdom."
Elara recoiled, stumbling backward onto the sand. "Murder? You are asking me to murder him?"
"I am asking you to execute a tyrant," Caspian corrected smoothly, rising to his feet and closing the distance between them. He framed her face with his hands, his thumbs wiping away the rain and tears. "He has murdered your spirit every day for three years. He will take your child and turn it into a monster. He does not love you. He only loves the power you provide. I am offering you freedom."
He pressed his forehead against hers, his magic seeping into her skin, dulling the horror and amplifying her desperation. "You are strong enough, my Queen. Bring him to the water's edge tomorrow at midnight. I will paralyze him with my song. You will only need to push him into the surf. I will do the rest."
Elara looked into his black, endless eyes. She thought of Julian’s sneer. She thought of Beatrice’s triumphant laugh. She thought of a lifetime locked in a stone room, stripped of her child, stripped of her dignity.
She looked at the beautiful, devoted creature standing before her.
"Midnight," Elara whispered.
