Chapter 4
The Heir's Chain
❧
The Midpoint of her tragic existence arrived on a sweltering Tuesday afternoon.
Elara had been feeling unwell for several days—bouts of dizziness, a profound fatigue that she initially blamed on her midnight excursions, and a persistent nausea that made the rich palace food repulsive.
When she fainted in the drawing-room during a poetry reading, the royal physician was summoned immediately.
Elara lay in her massive, canopied bed, staring blankly at the ornate ceiling as the elderly physician packed his leather bag.
"Congratulations, Your Highness," the doctor said, his voice laced with genuine relief. "It is early, but there is no doubt. You are with child. The Crown has its heir."
The words did not bring joy. They fell upon Elara like physical blows.
She was pregnant. With Julian’s child.
The door to her bedchamber burst open. Julian strode in, looking more animated than he had in months. He didn't ask how she felt. He didn't take her hand. He simply looked at her stomach with a greedy, victorious gleam in his eye.
"Finally," Julian sneered, dismissing the physician with a wave of his hand. Once they were alone, he walked to the foot of the bed. "You have finally proven yourself useful, Elara. See to it that you rest. I will not have you jeopardizing my lineage through your usual melancholic clumsiness."
He turned on his heel and left, undoubtedly heading to celebrate the security of his throne with Beatrice.
Elara curled into a tight ball beneath the silk sheets, a silent scream tearing her throat apart.
She was trapped. Before, there had always been a faint, impossible fantasy that she might run away, that she might somehow escape the marriage. But an heir changed everything. The Crown would never let her go. She would be locked in Somerset House, or whichever palace Julian deemed fit to banish her to once the child was born, doomed to a lifetime of isolation and mockery. Her child would be raised by nurses and tutors, shaped into another arrogant, cruel replica of its father.
The gilded cage had just slammed shut, and the lock was forged from her own flesh.
