Chapter 7
Zero Point

The silence of the Deadlands was different than the silence of the Ivory Zone. It wasn't empty. It was full of wind, and shifting metal, and life.
Aris sat on the edge of a cliff overlooking the endless gray expanse. The crash had been three days ago. The City had scanned the wreckage, found no life signs, and assumed the EMP had fried them. They were ghosts.
Kael sat behind him, bandaging a cut on his arm.
"They'll stop looking eventually," Kael said. "We can go further south. There are settlements where the Clarity signal doesn't reach."
Aris looked at the horizon. "I can build a lab there. We can synthesize the serum. You won't decay."
"And you?" Kael asked. "What about your termination date?"
"I disabled the kill-switch in my genetic code when I was in your mainframe," Aris said casually. "I’m a very good engineer."
Kael laughed. He scooted forward and wrapped his arms around Aris from behind, resting his chin on Aris’s shoulder. The contact was grounding. The Resonance hummed, low and content, like a cat purring.
"One thing left," Aris said.
He pulled a small scalpel from his pocket.
"You sure?" Kael asked, his voice serious. "That chip is part of you."
"It’s a shackle," Aris said. "I don't need clarity, Kael. It’s boring."
He handed the scalpel to Kael. "Do it. I trust you."
Kael took the blade. His hand, once trembling with decay, was rock steady. He brushed the hair from Aris’s neck.
"This is going to hurt," Kael warned.
"I know," Aris leaned back into the warmth of his mate. "I’m looking forward to feeling it."
Kael made the cut. Aris flinched, a sharp intake of breath, tears pricking his eyes.
And then, the white noise in his head—the constant, hum of logic—vanished.
The world flooded in. The smell of the rain. The rough texture of Kael’s skin. The overwhelming, terrifying, beautiful surge of love.
Aris turned in Kael’s arms and kissed him. It wasn't logical. It wasn't efficient. It was messy, and desperate, and perfect.
"Hello, Aris," Kael whispered against his lips.
"Hello, Kael," Aris smiled, crying freely for the first time in his life. "Now... let’s go find some coffee."
