Chapter 3
Resonance
❧
The "lab" Kael provided was a joke. It was a corner of the bunker with a soldered table, a pile of stolen medical scanners, and a terrifying amount of copper wire.
But Aris was adaptable. Intelligence was about utilizing available resources.
For three days, Aris worked. He reconfigured the scanners. He synthesized a stabilizing serum from mold cultures and engine coolant additives.
Kael watched him the whole time. The Warlord sat in the corner, sweating through the pain, his eyes tracking Aris’s every move.
"You move like a machine," Kael commented on the third night.
Aris didn't look up from the microscope. "Efficiency is survival."
"It’s lonely," Kael countered.
"Loneliness is an emotion. I do not have those."
"Bullshit," Kael muttered. He stood up, stumbling slightly. The decay was accelerating. "I can smell your fear. It’s sour. And underneath that... curiosity."
Kael collapsed into the chair Aris had set up for the procedure. "Do it. I can't take the headache anymore."
Aris approached him. "This requires physical interface. I need to access your port."
Kael leaned his head back, exposing the chrome port at the base of his skull. His neck was thick, vulnerable.
Aris reached out. His fingers brushed Kael’s skin.
* SNAP.*
The connection was instantaneous. It wasn't just data. It was feeling.
Aris gasped, his Clarity chip whirring furiously to suppress the input. He felt Kael’s pain—white-hot needles in the brain. He felt Kael’s rage—a burning coal in the gut. But underneath the agony, he felt something else.
A golden, warm hum. A sense of *rightness*.
It was a biological resonance. A feedback loop. Aris’s unique bio-electric signature wasn't just compatible with Kael’s; it was the missing key. Aris was the cooling agent to Kael’s overheating reactor.
"You feel it," Kael rasped, his eyes closed. "Don't tell me you don't feel it."
"It’s... a statistical anomaly," Aris whispered. His hands were shaking. He had never shaken before.
He inserted the probe.
Instead of just running the diagnostic, Aris found himself leaning in. He placed his other hand on Kael’s chest to steady himself. Kael’s heart was beating like a sledgehammer.
Aris pushed his own mental calm into the connection. He visualized the pathways cooling, the red turning to blue.
Kael groaned, a sound of pure relief that bordered on a moan. He reached up, blindly grabbing Aris’s waist.
"Stay," Kael whispered. "Just... stay in my head."
Aris should have pulled away. It was unprofessional. It was dangerous. But the Clarity chip was failing to categorize the interaction. The "glitch" was overriding the programming.
Aris stayed. He stood between the Warlord’s knees, his hands on the man’s neck, acting as a living anchor for a soul that was drifting away. For the first time in his life, Aris wasn't solving a problem. He was connecting.
