Chapter 7
The Dao of Two
❧
The infirmary smelled of medicinal herbs, sharp and bitter.
Zoya floated in a dark void. She felt light. Empty. She had burned it all. She would be a mortal now. A cripple in a world of gods.
But she was alive. And Kael was alive. It was enough.
She forced her eyes open.
She wasn't alone. Kael was sitting by the bed, his head resting on the mattress, asleep. He was holding her hand so tightly his knuckles were white.
Zoya squeezed his fingers weaky.
Kael’s head snapped up. He looked terrible—dark circles under his eyes, unshaven. But when he saw her eyes open, he looked like the sun rising.
"You're awake," he breathed. He leaned in, checking her pupils, her pulse.
"I'm alive," Zoya rasped. "But my cultivation... it's gone, isn't it?"
Kael paused. A strange look crossed his face. He smiled—not his arrogant smirk, but a soft, genuine smile.
"Check your Dantian."
Zoya closed her eyes. She expected to find a dried-up husk.
Instead, she found... a star.
Her Dantian wasn't empty. It was swirling with a dual-colored energy—gold and blue lightning. It was denser, stronger than anything she had ever felt at the Foundation Stage.
"What..."
"The Soul Resonance," Kael explained, stroking her hair. "It didn't just burn your essence. It merged ours. When we struck Shen... the universe answered. We are Dao Companions now, Zoya. My cultivation is your cultivation. Your path is my path."
Zoya stared at him. Dao Companions. It was a legendary bond, rarer than phoenix feathers. It meant they were spiritually linked forever. They would rise together, fall together.
"You're stuck with me," Kael whispered, leaning his forehead against hers. "For this life, and the next."
"I think," Zoya smiled, tears leaking from her eyes, "I'm okay with that."
"By the way," Kael added, pulling back slightly. "Elder Shen confessed. The Sect Leader is cleaning house. We're heroes."
"I don't care about being a hero," Zoya said, pulling him down by the collar of his robe.
She kissed him. It tasted of ozone and medicine and life.
"I just wanted to win the bet," she murmured against his lips.
Kael laughed, the sound vibrating through her chest. "Fine. You win. Now, rest, Empress. We have training in the morning."
Zoya closed her eyes, listening to the steady beat of his heart—a sound she had traveled through time to save. And for the first time in two lives, she slept without dreaming of ash.
