Chapter 6

The Resonance

The purple lightning lashed at her skin, burning through her robes, searing her flesh. Zoya gritted her teeth, ignoring the pain. She was the Empress. She had walked through hell before; she could walk through this.
"Kael!" she screamed, diving under a wild swing of his fist.
She slammed her body against his.
He thrashed, trying to throw her off. The corrupt Qi was like acid, eating away at her Foundation Stage defenses.
"I won't let you go," Zoya sobbed, wrapping her arms around his waist. "Not this time."
She closed her eyes and did the unthinkable. She reached into her own Dantian, into the small, fragile puddle of her cultivation.
And she set it on fire.
* Burning Essence.* It was a forbidden technique, sacrificing one’s future potential, one’s lifespan, for a momentary burst of godlike power.
Golden light erupted from Zoya’s skin. It was blinding, warm, and pure. It clashed with Kael’s purple corruption.
"Soul Resonance!" Zoya cried out.
She pressed her forehead against his. She didn't attack him. She opened the gates of her soul and invited him in.
It was a technique that required absolute trust. Absolute vulnerability.
Kael froze.
In the mindscape, amidst the chaos of the corruption, he heard her. He felt her. He felt the decade of grief, the timeline that never happened, the love that had crossed time to find him.
* Zoya?* his mind whispered.
* Come back to me,* she answered.
The golden light surged, flowing from Zoya into Kael. It acted as a filter, purging the corruption from his meridians, pushing the black Qi out of his system.
But the corruption had to go somewhere.
Elder Shen, watching from the box, stood up in alarm. "What is she doing?"
Zoya opened her eyes. They were glowing gold. Kael’s eyes cleared, returning to their brilliant blue. He was back. And he was holding her.
"You..." Kael gasped, realizing what she was burning. "You're destroying your future for me."
"You are my future," Zoya whispered.
She collapsed against him, her strength failing.
Elder Shen saw his plan failing. He leaped from the VIP box, soaring down toward the arena, a dagger of green energy forming in his hand. He intended to finish the job himself.
"Die, brat!" Shen roared.
Kael looked up. He saw the Elder. He saw Zoya limp in his arms.
The arrogance of the Golden Boy returned, but tempered with a cold, terrifying fury.
"Hold on to me," Kael said to Zoya.
He didn't let go of her. Instead, he drew on the connection she had forged. Her golden essence mixed with his lightning.
"Dual Art: Golden Dragon Ascending!"
Kael punched upward.
A massive dragon formed of lightning and gold erupted from the arena floor. It roared, swallowing Elder Shen’s green dagger, swallowing the Elder himself.
Shen screamed as he was blasted into the sky, crashing into the barrier of the floating island with bone-shattering force.
The dragon faded.
Silence fell over the arena.
Kael fell to his knees, clutching Zoya against his chest.
"Zoya?" he begged, shaking her. "Zoya, wake up."
She didn't move. Her skin was gray. The burning of essence exacted a heavy toll.
"Help!" Kael screamed at the stunned crowd. "Someone help her!"
