Chapter 4
The Diner and the Debt
❧
They found Toby six hours later, hiding in the walk-in freezer of the ruined Oakhaven Diner. The teenager was half-frozen, clutching a tire iron, weeping in terror.
When Sadie pulled him into the light of her flashlight, wrapping a thermal blanket around his trembling shoulders, the relief was palpable.
"We got him," Sadie said, looking up at Vance, who was standing guard by the shattered diner windows, watching the ash fall. "We have to get back to my truck. The breach I made... it has to still be open."
"It is," Vance said quietly, not looking at her. "The fog won't recede until the transaction is complete."
Sadie paused, her brow furrowing. She stood up, walking over to him. "What transaction?"
Vance finally turned from the window. The hardened survivor look was gone, replaced by a profound, heavy sorrow. "The Echo isn't just a place, Sadie. It's an entity. It breathes. It starves. The fog goes to the real world to feed. It demands equilibrium."
"An old soul for a new one," Vance explained, his voice eerily calm. "It took me ten years ago. It took Toby tonight. The breach you made when you crashed your truck... it's a door. Toby can walk out of it. You can walk out of it, because your name isn't on the ledger yet. But the door won't open unless the toll remains."
Sadie felt the blood drain from her face. "No. No, Vance."
"I’m staying, Sadie," Vance said, stepping toward her, reaching out to touch her cheek. "I’ve survived here this long. I can keep surviving. You take the kid. You go back to Oakhaven and you live a long, beautiful life."
"I am not leaving without you!" Sadie shouted, smacking his hand away. Her chest heaved with a sudden, violent fury. "I lived ten years with the guilt of letting you go! I died the day you disappeared, Vance! I am not doing it again!"
"You have to!" Vance roared back, his eyes flashing. "I am corrupted, Sadie! My blood is turning to ash! If I leave, the entity will just come back for someone else. Someone has to hold the line."
"To hell with the line," Sadie snarled, stepping into his space, her chin tilted up defiantly. "Where is the epicenter? Where is the heart of this damn thing?"
Vance blinked, thrown off balance by her sheer, suicidal audacity. "The Abandoned Mill. But you can't go there. The shadows... they swarm the epicenter. It's suicide."
"It's a rescue mission," Sadie corrected, her storm-cloud eyes locking onto his. "And I don't leave my people behind. We are going to the mill. We are going to tear the heart out of this legend, and we are all walking out together."
