Chapter 5

The Architect's Secret

Three days passed in an agonizing blur. Harper couldn't eat. She couldn't sleep. Her apartment felt like a sterile prison cell.
Desperate to occupy her mind, she pulled out the architectural blueprints and historical documents she had compiled for the Sterling House renovation. She spread them across her tiny kitchen table, tracing the ink lines of the Victorian floorplans.
As she shuffled through her notes, a photocopy of an old 1920s police report caught her eye. It detailed a raid on a bootlegging ring that had operated out of the hills near the Sterling estate. The report included a sketch of a gang tattoo found on the arrested men.
Harper froze. Her blood ran cold.
The sketch was a jagged crescent moon.
It was the exact same brand she had seen scarred into the shoulder of the rogue wolf that attacked her.
She began frantically cross-referencing the police report with the original architectural blueprints of the house. The bootleggers hadn't just operated *near* the estate; they had utilized a forgotten, subterranean network of coal chutes and smuggling tunnels that connected the deep woods directly to the sub-basement of the Sterling House.
* First, you stay out of the basement. The foundation is unstable.* Silas’s rule echoed in her mind. But Silas didn't know about the bootlegger history; the pack had likely assumed the basement was just structurally compromised. He didn't know there was a backdoor into his impenetrable fortress. The rogues weren't just encroaching on the territory; they were using the old tunnels to bypass Silas's patrols entirely. They were planning an ambush from the inside.
Harper grabbed her phone and dialed Chloe's number. It went straight to voicemail. She dialed Silas. Nothing.
Panic gripped her chest. It was a full moon tonight. If the rogues were going to strike to take the territory, tonight was the night.
Harper didn't hesitate. She grabbed her keys, a heavy steel crowbar from her toolkit, and bolted out the door. She didn't care that Silas had kicked her out. She didn't care that she didn't belong. They were her family, and they were in danger.
