Chapter 4
The Fracture
❧
The aftermath of the revelation shattered whatever fragile bond had been building between them.
Silas practically carried Harper back to the house. When Chloe returned the next morning, she took one look at Harper’s pale, shell-shocked face and Silas’s murderous expression, and knew the secret was out.
Chloe sat Harper down in the kitchen, offering apologies and explanations. They were Shifters. A small, insular pack bound to the land. The rogue that attacked Harper was part of a violent, transient pack that had been trying to encroach on their territory for months. Silas had been patrolling the borders every night to keep them safe.
Harper listened, her mind struggling to process the supernatural reality. But despite the impossibility of it all, she wasn't afraid of them. She wasn't afraid of Silas. He had saved her. He was still the man who brought her tea and quietly watched her work.
But Silas didn't see it that way.
That afternoon, he cornered Harper in the foyer. His face was a mask of cold, unyielding stone.
"Pack your things," he ordered, his voice devoid of any warmth.
Harper stared at him, her heart dropping into her stomach. "What?"
"You're leaving. Today." He refused to meet her eyes, staring resolutely at the wall behind her head. "I've called a contractor from the pack. They will finish the renovations with Chloe. You've done enough."
"Silas, no," Harper pleaded, taking a step toward him. "I'm not afraid of you. I understand why you kept it a secret."
"It doesn't matter if you're afraid!" Silas snapped, finally looking at her. His eyes were fraught with a wild, desperate pain. "You are human, Harper. You are fragile. A rogue almost tore your throat out last night because of me. Because you were on my territory. You don't belong in a pack. You don't belong here."
The words hit Harper with the force of a physical blow. *You don't belong here.* It was the same sentence she had heard from social workers, from tired foster mothers, from every temporary home that had ever cast her out.
The heat that had always radiated between them turned to ice.
Harper swallowed the sob rising in her throat. She straightened her spine, pulling her dignity around herself like a shield. "Understood."
She packed her bags in silence. Chloe cried, begging Silas to reconsider, but the Alpha was immoveable. Harper drove back to the city, the heavy fog hiding her tears.
When she unlocked the door to her cramped studio apartment, the silence was deafening. The walls were stark white. There was no mahogany, no drafty windows, no brooding giant watching over her. She dropped her bags on the floor and slid down the wall, burying her face in her hands. She had survived the revelation of a supernatural world, only to be destroyed by the same mundane heartbreak that had plagued her entire life: being unwanted.
