The Masquerade and the Lie

By the end of the second week, Lily was a different woman. The modest blouses were gone, replaced by flowing, ethereal dresses woven from Aether-silk that clung to her curves and shimmered in the neon light. Her posture was no longer rigid with anxiety; it was relaxed, confident, and fueled by the steady, intoxicating romance blooming between her and Dorian.
To introduce her to the elite of the Aether, Dorian brought her to the Midnight Masquerade—a lavish, opulent ball held in a floating ballroom suspended above the city.
The ballroom was a sensory overload of magic and wealth. Fae lords danced with vampires in diamond-studded masks. Illusions of starlight exploded across the vaulted ceiling. Lily, wearing a delicate silver half-mask and a dress of midnight blue, clung to Dorian’s arm, feeling like a queen.
Dorian was attentive, protective, and devastatingly handsome in his formal wear. But as the Lord of the syndicate, his attention was constantly demanded.
"I must speak with the Council of Heralds," Dorian murmured, pressing a kiss to her bare shoulder that made her pulse spike. "Stay by the gardens. I will return in five minutes, my bird."
Lily nodded, watching him stride away, the crowd parting for his commanding presence like the Red Sea.
She turned toward the indoor botanical gardens, admiring a glowing, bioluminescent orchid.
"He certainly knows how to dress his pets."
Lily turned. Standing behind her was a woman of impossible, terrifying beauty. She had skin the color of pearl, hair that flowed like liquid sapphire, and eyes that were entirely black. A Siren. She wore a gold mask that covered the upper half of her face.
"I'm sorry?" Lily asked, her good girl manners instinctively rising to the surface.
"I am Seraphina," the Siren smiled, though it didn't reach her cold eyes. "A rival producer in the syndicate. You are Dorian’s newest project. The human prodigy."
"I am his artist," Lily corrected, lifting her chin defensively.
Seraphina let out a melodic, mocking laugh. "Is that what he told you? Oh, you poor, sweet, naive child. You think you're special. You think the great Dorian Vance actually cares for a twenty-one-year-old mortal."
"He does," Lily said, though a tiny, cold seed of doubt planted itself in her chest. The age gap. The power imbalance. She had ignored it, swept up in the magic.
Seraphina stepped closer, her voice dropping to a hypnotic, venomous whisper. "Humans who perform at the Solstice Gala don't just win a record deal, little bird. The magic of the performance requires a contract. A binding contract. The moment you sing on that stage, your soul, your magic, and your voice are bound to your sponsor forever."
Lily’s breath hitched. "Dorian didn't say anything about a binding contract."
"Of course he didn't," Seraphina sneered. "He is a predator, Lily. He uses his age, his wealth, and his power to groom young, innocent humans. He breaks down your inhibitions, makes you fall in love with him, and then he binds you to him to drain your magic for his own empire. You aren't his artist. You're a battery. And when you run dry, he will discard you."
The glowing orchid next to Lily suddenly seemed to lose its light.
* He breaks down your inhibitions. He makes you fall in love with him.* It was exactly what Dorian had done. He had targeted her fears. He had seduced her out of her comfort zone. He had engineered every moment of their intimacy. Was it all a manipulation? Was her first taste of freedom just a meticulously planned trap designed by an ancient monster?
Lily backed away from the Siren, her heart shattering in her chest. She didn't wait for Dorian to return. She turned and fled into the glittering crowd.
