Chapter 3
Unlocking the Voice
❧
The next three weeks were a psychological and sensual crucible.
Dorian was a ruthless, demanding teacher. He didn't care about sheet music. He didn't care about perfect pitch. He cared about the raw, visceral emotion that fueled the magic of the Aether.
On the fifth day, Lily was sitting at the grand piano in the center of the Spire, the afternoon light casting long shadows across the keys. She was playing a Beethoven sonata, her fingers flying with flawless, mechanical precision.
Suddenly, Dorian’s large hands slammed down on the keys, producing a jarring, discordant crash.
Lily jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. "What did I do wrong?" she asked automatically, the programmed apology tumbling from her lips.
"You are hiding!" Dorian barked, leaning over her, his imposing frame casting her entirely in shadow. He was wearing a dark dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing muscular forearms corded with tension. "I don't want Beethoven's grief, Lily. I want yours. Stop playing the notes and start playing the space between them. You are angry. You are terrified. Let it bleed onto the keys!"
"I don't know how to be angry!" Lily cried out, her hands trembling in her lap. "I was taught to be quiet! I was taught to be good!"
Dorian exhaled a sharp breath. He moved behind her, the heat of his body radiating against her back. He reached around her, his large, rough hands covering her small, pale ones resting on her lap. He gently lifted her hands and placed them back onto the ivory keys.
"There is no 'good' here, little bird," Dorian whispered, his voice dropping to a low, intimate rumble directly beside her ear. His breath ghosted across her neck, sending a violent shiver down her spine. "There is only truth. You want to be wild. You want to scream. I can feel it vibrating in your pulse."
He kept his hands over hers, pressing her fingers down into a dark, heavy, minor chord. The piano resonated, the sound vibrating through the floorboards and up into her chest.
"Play it," Dorian commanded softly, his lips brushing the shell of her ear. "Play the fear of a twenty-one-year-old girl who realizes she has wasted her life being polite. Don't think. Feel."
Lily closed her eyes. The proximity of the older man, the intoxicating scent of his cedar and smoke cologne, the absolute, commanding authority in his voice—it shattered the dam.
She pressed the keys. Not with precision, but with force. She played the minor chord, then another. She let the music become a chaotic, messy, dark reflection of her own repressed desires. As her fingers flew across the keys, a faint, iridescent glow began to emanate from the strings of the piano. The magic in her blood was waking up, responding to the raw emotion.
Dorian stepped back, watching in profound awe as the modest, quiet girl transformed into a tempest of sound and light. Her voice joined the piano, starting as a fragile whisper and building into a soaring, haunting melody that lacked any lyrics but carried the weight of a thousand unspoken dreams.
When the final note echoed through the Spire, the glass of the windows was vibrating.
Lily sat at the bench, her chest heaving, tears streaming down her face. But she wasn't crying from fear. She was crying from pure, unadulterated liberation.
Dorian walked over to her. The cynical, jaded Lord of the Aether looked entirely undone. He reached out, gently wiping a tear from her cheek with his thumb.
"There she is," Dorian whispered, his silver eyes dark with a burning, undeniable hunger.
Lily looked up at him. The age gap, the power dynamic, the fear—it all evaporated in the heavy, electric tension between them. She reached up, wrapping her small hand around his wrist, holding his hand against her cheek.
Dorian groaned, a low, primal sound. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, devastating kiss.
It was a kiss that tasted of ancient power and new beginnings. Lily kissed him back with all the wild, untamed passion he had just unlocked, tangling her fingers in his silver-threaded hair, letting the Lord of the Aether pull her entirely out of the darkness and into his world.
