Chapter 6
The Valentine Merger
❧
The Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House was a sea of black tuxedos and muted, elegant evening gowns. Crystal chandeliers dripped from the ceiling, casting a cold, brilliant light over the hundreds of investors, socialites, and press members gathered for the event.
At the front of the room, standing behind a podium adorned with white roses, was Declan. He wore a stark black tuxedo, his jaw still faintly bruised from Ryan’s punch. He looked like a king standing at the gallows, his posture perfectly rigid, his expression an impenetrable mask of stoic acceptance.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Declan’s voice boomed through the microphone, echoing off the marble pillars. The room fell into a hushed silence. "We are gathered tonight to celebrate the integration of Sterling Holdings into Vance Capital. It is a formidable merger that will ensure the prosperity of thousands. However..."
He paused. He gripped the edges of the podium, his knuckles turning white. He swallowed hard, preparing to humiliate himself to set her free. "...I must address a personal matter. The rumors of my impending marriage to Chloe Sterling are—"
"Are entirely accurate!"
The voice rang out from the back of the ballroom, cutting through the heavy silence like a siren.
The crowd gasped, parting like the Red Sea.
Chloe stood at the top of the grand staircase, looking like a blazing inferno in her crimson gown. Her hair was swept up in an elegant, messy cascade, her cheeks flushed, her eyes locked entirely on the man at the podium.
Declan froze. His breath left him in a visible rush. For the first time in his life, the impenetrable CEO was entirely, completely paralyzed.
Chloe didn't wait. She marched down the stairs and straight down the center aisle, the heavy silk of her dress swishing loudly against the floor. The press cameras flashed wildly, but she ignored them. She walked right up the steps to the stage, stopping inches from Declan.
"What are you doing?" Declan hissed, his eyes wide, his voice tight with panic. "Chloe, go home. You're free. I fixed it."
"You didn't fix anything, you idiot," she whispered back, a brilliant, tearful smile breaking across her face. "You just left me alone in a really quiet apartment."
She reached out, gently cupping his face, her thumb brushing against the fading bruise on his jaw. He closed his eyes at her touch, a shudder ripping through his broad shoulders.
Chloe turned to the microphone, pulling it slightly toward her. She looked out at the sea of shocked faces, at her father, at her brother Ryan, who was smiling softly from the front row.
"Declan Vance is a man of contracts," Chloe announced to the silent ballroom, her voice ringing clear and strong. "He operates on logic, spreadsheets, and predictability. I am none of those things. I am messy. I am loud. I am chaos."
She turned back to Declan, her hazel eyes locking onto his dark ones. "But what he doesn't realize is that chaos needs a foundation to stand on. A hurricane is just wind until it meets the shore. Declan isn't a dictator. He is my anchor. He is the man who makes my coffee, who silently supports my art, and who was willing to destroy his own reputation just to see me happy."
Declan was staring at her as if she were a mirage, a dream his starved heart had conjured up. "Chloe..."
"I don't care that you drafted a contract to get me, Declan," she said softly, stepping into his space, her microphone forgotten. "Because I'm tearing up the contract. I don't want an arranged marriage."
Declan’s chest hitched.
"I just want a real one," she finished, her voice thick with emotion. "I want you. Flaws, rigid schedules, spreadsheets, and all."
Declan didn't hesitate. The stoic mask completely shattered. In front of the city's elite, the ruthless CEO of Vance Capital pulled the chaotic artist into his arms and kissed her with a desperate, consuming passion that defied every logic and every rule he had ever lived by.
The ballroom erupted in a deafening roar of applause and flashing cameras, but neither of them heard it. Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck, sinking into his solid, unyielding warmth, finally finding exactly where she belonged.
It was the most irrational, uncalculated move of Declan Vance’s life. And as he held the vibrant, messy love of his life against his chest, he knew it was the best deal he would ever make.
