Chapter 5

The Silence

For six days, the penthouse was entirely, terrifyingly silent.
Chloe remained there. She didn't pack her bags. She didn't go back to her chaotic studio. She sat in the middle of the sterile, monochromatic living room, surrounded by her vibrant paints and her vintage records, and realized that without Declan, the color meant absolutely nothing.
She missed the quiet click of his keys at 5:00 a.m. She missed the subtle scent of his expensive cedar cologne lingering in the hallway. She realized, with devastating clarity, that his rigidity wasn't a cage; it was an anchor. She was a kite in a hurricane, constantly thrashing in the wind of her own emotions. Declan was the steady, unmoving ground that kept her from flying away entirely.
He hadn't bought her to trap her. He had bought the company to save her family, and he had structured the marriage because he was terrified she would never give a man like him a chance. His acts of service—the studio, the coffee, the quiet acceptance of her chaos—were his love language.
He was the best man she had ever known, and she had broken his heart.
On the evening of February 14th, Chloe stood in the master bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror. She was supposed to attend the Valentine's Day Gala tonight. It was supposed to be their grand public debut. Instead, it was going to be Declan, standing alone in front of the city's elite, absorbing a massive public relations hit to protect her freedom.
"To hell with that," Chloe whispered to her reflection.
She walked into her bedroom and opened her closet. She bypassed the elegant, muted silver gown her mother had picked out for the event. Instead, she reached into the back and pulled out a dress she had designed herself. It was a spectacular, dramatic ballgown in a deep, vibrant shade of crimson. It was loud. It was chaotic. It was entirely, unapologetically Chloe.
