Chapter 3
The Variable
❧
By the fifth month, the baby was the size of a melon. Wolf pregnancies were accelerated, efficient, and brutal on the mother’s body.
Chloe spent most of her time in the solarium, watching the clouds. She felt heavy, like an anchor was forming in her womb.
The public knew about her now. Sterling had released a press statement: *A private romance. A destined mate.* The tabloids called her "Cinderella of the Spire." They analyzed her blurry photos, praising her "quiet elegance."
But inside the penthouse, the silence was deafening.
Chloe began to notice the anomalies.
*Anomaly 1:* There was no marking bite.
Alphas were possessive. Biology dictated they mark their mates to ward off rivals. Sterling had never even bared his teeth near her neck. When she asked, he claimed it was "too risky" for the pregnancy to introduce the venom of a mark.
*Anomaly 2:* Isolation.
Her phone was monitored. "For your safety," Sterling said. Her parents were moved to a condo in a gated community, but she wasn't allowed to visit. "Germs," Sterling said.
*Anomaly 3:* The schematics.
Chloe, bored and restless, had started memorizing the layout of the penthouse. She noticed that the elevators required a retina scan that only Sterling had. She couldn't leave.
One evening, Chloe sat in the nursery. It was a sterile white room filled with the most advanced developmental toys money could buy.
Sterling entered. He smelled of rain and another scent—perfume. Expensive, spicy perfume.
He saw her sniffing the air. He didn't flinch.
"A business associate," he said smoothy.
"You smell like her," Chloe said. It was the first time she had challenged him.
"Pheromones stick, Chloe. You know the science." He walked past her to the crib, running a finger along the railing. "Is the baby moving?"
"Yes," Chloe said. "He kicks when I listen to music."
"Good. Motor skills are developing ahead of schedule."
"Sterling," Chloe said. "Do you love me?"
The question hung in the sterile air.
Sterling turned. He looked at her with that polished, metallic gaze. He tilted his head, as if she had asked him the square root of a prime number.
"I provide for you," he said. "I have secured your future. I have given you a purpose. Is that not love?"
"It sounds like a contract," Chloe whispered.
Sterling smiled. It was a terrifying, perfect smile. "All relationships are contracts, Chloe. Some are just more honest about the terms."
He turned and left.
Chloe went to her room. She pulled out her notebook. She wrote down the variables.
*X = Wealth.*
*Y = Security.*
*Z = Affection.*
The equation didn't balance. The result was negative.
She wasn't a wife. She was an employee.
