Chapter 2
The Golden Cage
❧
The Celestial Penthouse was not a home. It was a biosphere.
Located at the pinnacle of the Sterling Tower, it was a sprawling fortress of glass and steel floating above the smog of the city. The air was filtered to 99.9% purity. The water was mineral-enhanced.
Chloe’s life underwent a complete structural overhaul.
Her rags were replaced by silk maternity wear in neutral tones. Her ramen diet was replaced by meals prepared by a nutritionist—plates of steamed fish, leafy greens, and supplements arranged with geometric precision.
"It’s beautiful," Chloe said on her third day, standing in the center of the living room that was larger than her parents' entire house.
"It is optimal," Sterling corrected. He was working at a holographic interface, manipulating stock trends with a flick of his finger. "Chaos is bad for development. We need order."
Chloe tried to fit into the variable of "The Alpha’s Mate." She read books on high-society etiquette. She tried to engage Sterling in conversation when he returned from the office.
"I was looking at the actuarial tables for the werewolf population in the southern sector," Chloe said over dinner one night. "The variance in shift-rates is fascinating. I think there’s a correlation with the water supply."
Sterling didn't look up from his steak. He cut a perfect square of meat.
"You don't need to worry about data anymore, Chloe. That was your old life. Your job now is to rest."
"I like data," she said softly. "It makes sense to me."
"Stress releases cortisol," Sterling said. "Cortisol crosses the placenta. It lowers the IQ potential of the fetus. Read a novel, Chloe. Something... light."
He stood up, wiped his mouth, and walked over to her. He placed a hand on her stomach, which was just beginning to show a curve.
He stared at the fabric of her dress, focused entirely on the terrifyingly rapid growth of the wolf-blood child inside her.
"Perfect," he murmured.
He didn't kiss her. He didn't ask how she felt. He patted her belly like one would pat a prize racehorse, and then retreated to his study.
Chloe sat alone at the long marble table. She told herself this was just how Alphas were. Intense. Focused. Protective.
She touched the spot where his hand had been. It felt cold.
*Hypothesis:* He is busy.
*Conclusion:* He loves the baby, so he loves me.
She forced the data to fit the conclusion. But deep down, the error margin was growing.
