Chapter 1

The air in the private medical wing of the Lu Tower tasted of ozone and expensive sandalwood. High above the neon-drenched arteries of modern Shanghai, the room hummed with a tension that was both mechanical and metaphysical. Lu Feng stood with his back to the medical bay, his tailored charcoal suit reflecting the flickering lights of the city below. He didn’t need to look at the woman on the table to feel her presence; her Qi was thin, thready, and utterly unremarkable.
"The soul-seed is stable," Feng said, his voice carrying the effortless chill of a man who had never been told 'no.' "Do not mistake this for a partnership, Lin Yue. You are a vessel. My father’s arrays will pull the fractured essence from my core, filter it through your vitality, and return it to me whole. You are the soil. I am the tree."
Lin Yue didn’t respond with words. Her breathing was rhythmic, a low-tier cultivation technique designed for endurance. She lay amidst a web of glowing silicon filaments and jade needles, her eyes fixed on the ceiling. She was a daughter of a fallen house, sold into this contract to pay off debts she hadn't accrued, yet she carried herself with a silence that felt like a judgment.
Feng turned, his lip curling. His own spiritual root pulsed with a dull, throbbing ache—the price of his arrogance during the corporate wars of the previous year. He needed this restoration. Without a perfect Golden Core, the board of directors would circle like sharks.
"Begin," Feng commanded the automated system.
The array erupted.
A jagged bolt of violet energy arched from the central pylon, slamming into the jade inhibitors. The room’s "modern" safety protocols shrieked as the ancient soul-seed within Yue’s womb-space reacted to the artificial stimulation. It wasn't filtering the energy; it was devouring it, drawing too much power from Feng’s fractured core.
"Warning: Spiritual feedback imminent," the synthetic voice droned.
Feng gasped, falling to one knee as he felt his very soul being sucked toward the woman on the table. The arrogance bled from his face, replaced by a raw, primal terror. The array was malfunctioning; it was going to shred them both.
Suddenly, the violent thrumming shifted. Lin Yue’s eyes snapped open. They weren't filled with the expected panic. Instead, they glowed with a soft, steady amber light. She began to chant—not the modern formulas Feng had provided, but an ancient, forbidden breath-control sequence from her own ruined lineage.
She reached out, her fingers locking onto Feng’s wrist.
The contact was an explosion. Their Qi didn't just meet; it merged. In that moment of forced intimacy, Feng saw her. He felt the vast, hidden depth of her spirit—a foundation far more refined than his own, despite her lack of resources. He realized with a jolt of horror that the procedure his father had designed was a death sentence for her. To heal his "superior" root, the soul-seed would strip her of every spark of life she possessed.
"Stop it," Yue whispered, her voice strained under the pressure of the swirling energy. "You’re killing the vessel, Lu Feng. Is your crown worth the blood?"
The pylon groaned, sparks showering over them. Feng looked at the kill-switch on the console, then back at the woman holding his soul together. If he cut the power now, the soul-seed would dissipate, and his path to the peak of cultivation would be permanently barred. He would be a mundane man in a world of gods. But if he let it continue, he would be a murderer of the only person who had ever truly seen him.
Feng’s hand hovered over the crystalline lever. His eyes met hers—no longer the arrogant master looking at a servant, but a gambler looking at his final hand.
"My father always said power requires sacrifice," Feng muttered, a dark, enigmatic smirk playing on his lips. "He just never specified whose."
His fingers gripped the switch. Instead of pulling it to 'Off,' he twisted the dial into a forbidden resonance frequency, one that bypassed the corporate safety limiters entirely. The room was engulfed in a blinding, white-hot spiritual flare. The glass of the skyscraper cracked, the neon lights of Shanghai vanished behind a veil of pure energy, and for one heartbeat, two souls became indistinguishable.
When the light faded, the machines were silent. The array lay in ruins, the jade needles turned to ash. Lu Feng stood over the table, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his hand still resting where the power had surged. Lin Yue lay still, her chest rising and falling slowly, her eyes searching his for an answer.
Neither spoke. The door to the wing began to hiss open as security approached, but whether Lu Feng had saved her life or simply claimed her power for a new, more terrifying purpose remained hidden behind his cold, unreadable gaze.
