Chapter 1
Chapter 1
❧
The air on the observation balcony tasted of ozone and expensive cologne. Below, in the floodlit arena of Iron Gate Academy, students in carbon-fiber tactical gear moved like ghosts through a simulated urban war zone. To the billionaire donors watching from the lower tiers, it was a display of peak human investment. To Jaxson Vance, it was a cage.
Jaxson adjusted his earpiece, the sleek metal cold against his skin. His stepfather, Silas, had been clear: *A shadow is moving against the Vance interests tonight. Neutralize the breach, Jaxson, and prove you’re worth the name.*
A floorboard creaked behind him. Jaxson spun, his hand blurring toward the holstered sidearm at his hip, but a familiar, gravelly voice stopped him cold.
"Still twitchy, Jax. You always did take Silas’s bedtime stories too seriously."
Leo Thorne leaned against the reinforced glass doorframe, looking entirely too comfortable in a tailored tuxedo that probably cost more than the academy’s drone fleet. He was older, broader than Jaxson remembered, with the same reckless glint in his eyes that had once made him Jaxson’s hero—and his brother’s closest confidant.
"Leo," Jaxson hissed, his heart hammering against his ribs. "You’re the 'intruder'? You need to leave. Now. If the security team catches you, Silas won't just call the police. He’ll bury you."
Leo didn’t move. Instead, he took a step forward, his gaze scanning Jaxson’s tactical vest and the grim set of his jaw. "I’m not the one in danger, Jax. I’m the one with the exit strategy. Did he tell you why he’s so obsessed with your 'performance' tonight?"
"To protect the family," Jaxson said, though the words felt like ash.
"To sell the asset," Leo corrected, his voice dropping an octave. "I’ve seen the wire transfers. Silas isn't grooming you to lead the company. He’s selling your contract to a Tier-One private security firm in the UAE. By dawn, you won't be a son or a student. You’ll be a line item on a corporate ledger."
The world tilted. Jaxson lunged, grabbing Leo by the lapels and slamming him against the glass balcony rail. The combat drills continued below, a blur of motion, but here, everything was static and sharp. "You’re lying. My brother wouldn't let him."
"Your brother is the one who sent me," Leo whispered, refusing to fight back. "He’s been fighting Silas from the inside for months. This is it, Jax. The door is open, but you have to walk through it."
The heavy double doors of the balcony swung open before Jaxson could respond. Silas Vance stepped through, flanked by two stone-faced guards with their hands on their weapons. Silas didn't look like a father; he looked like a man inspecting a faulty piece of machinery.
"Step away from him, Jaxson," Silas commanded, his voice a polished blade. "I told you to neutralize the threat. Do it now, or I’ll consider your scholarship—and your mother’s medical trust—forfeited."
Jaxson felt the weight of the academy, the weight of his stepfather’s billions, pressing down on him. He looked at Silas, then back at Leo. Leo’s hand reached out, grazing Jaxson’s wrist—a silent, steadying touch that felt more like home than any palace Silas had ever built.
"He's not a threat, Silas," Jaxson said, his voice finding a new, jagged edge. "He's the only one in this room telling the truth."
"Neutralize him," Silas barked to the guards.
As the guards moved, Jaxson didn't hesitate. He pivoted, using Leo’s shoulder as a fulcrum to launch a spinning kick that caught the first guard’s temple. In one fluid motion, he drew his training sidearm—loaded with high-impact kinetic rounds—and fired two shots into the second guard’s chest plate, knocking him breathless against the wall.
Jaxson stood between Silas and Leo, his weapon leveled at the man who had bought his loyalty for far too long. "The contract is void," Jaxson said, his breath hitching. "I'm done being an asset."
Silas’s face contorted in rage, but he remained frozen. He knew Jaxson was the best the academy had ever produced.
Leo grabbed Jaxson’s arm, pulling him toward the emergency stairwell. "Time to go, kid. The car is at the perimeter."
They tore through the back corridors of the academy, the alarms finally beginning to wail. They burst through the side exit into the cool night air where a blacked-out SUV sat idling. Leo tossed Jaxson a burner phone and a set of keys.
"Your brother is waiting in Geneva," Leo said as they scrambled into the vehicle. He looked at Jaxson, his eyes softening as he shifted the car into gear. "And for the record? I’ve been waiting to get you away from him since the day I left."
As the lights of Iron Gate Academy faded into the rearview mirror, Jaxson leaned back into the leather seat. For the first time in years, the tactical precision was gone, replaced by a terrifying, beautiful freedom. He looked at Leo, the man who had broken every rule to save him, and finally let out the breath he’d been holding. They were moving fast, and they weren't looking back.
