Chapter 1
Chapter 1
❧
The mana-lights overhead flickered, casting rhythmic, skeletal shadows against the damp stone walls of the Sub-Level Summoning Chambers. Kaelen’s fingers were trembling, buried deep in the grip of Jace’s calloused hands. Between them, the chalk circle didn’t glow with the soft, golden hue of a protective spirit; instead, it bled a jagged, ultraviolet light that seemed to eat the air.
"Kaelen, it’s too heavy," Jace gasped, his knees hitting the floor. Sweat beaded on his brow, his golden-boy perfection cracking under the strain of the raw mana being ripped from his core. "The flow—it’s not cycling back. It’s just... going in."
Kaelen’s eyes were locked on the center of the rift. He saw the geometry of his own failure. A single stroke of the chalk, inverted in his desperation to impress the faculty and clear his family’s crushing debts, had turned a gate into a vacuum. "I can fix it," Kaelen hissed, though his voice broke. "Jace, give me more. Just a little more. I can stabilize the meridian."
"There’s nothing left to give," Jace whispered, but he didn't let go. He never let go.
A low, guttural thrum vibrated through the floorboards, a sound that wasn't heard so much as felt in the marrow of their bones. From the center of the circle, shadows that moved like liquid glass began to lash out. They weren't limbs; they were absences of matter, hooking into the boys' robes and skin.
"The seal is inside out," Kaelen realized, the horror finally drowning his ambition. "It’s not summoning something here, Jace. It’s pulling us *there*."
Kaelen tried to yank his hands away, to break the circuit and end the ritual, but the vacuum had its own gravity. The ozone smell turned to the stench of rotting light. The entity on the other side—a formless, hungering "Other"—pressed against the veil, using Jace’s massive mana reserves as a bridge.
"Break the connection!" Kaelen screamed over the rising roar of the void. "Jace, sever your core! You’ll lose your magic, but you’ll live! Cut the link!"
Jace looked up, his blue eyes bloodshot and shimmering with an agonizing clarity. He saw the terror in Kaelen’s face—the boy he had chased through the library stacks, the rival he had teased just to see a blush, the scholarship student who had everything to lose. If Jace severed his core now, the backlash would liquefy Kaelen’s nervous system.
"I've got you," Jace murmured, his voice barely audible against the screeching of the rift.
Instead of pulling away, Jace lunged forward. He used the last of his strength to jerk Kaelen into his personal space, yanking him out of the direct line of the shadow-tendrils. For a heartbeat, the chaos of the room vanished. Jace pressed his mouth to Kaelen’s—a frantic, salt-tasting kiss that tasted of copper and "goodbye." It was a confession delivered at the edge of an abyss, a final, reckless act of protection.
With a violent surge of gold-white light, Jace channeled every remaining drop of his life force into the circle’s perimeter. He wasn't finishing the summon; he was turning himself into a plug for the hole Kaelen had ripped in reality.
"Jace, no!"
The vacuum roared one last time, a sound like a world shattering. The ultraviolet light imploded.
Kaelen was thrown backward, his head hitting the stone floor with a dull thud. Silence rushed back into the room, heavy and suffocating. The mana-lights had burned out completely, leaving only the dim, red emergency glow of the hallway.
Kaelen scrambled to his damp knees, his lungs burning. "Jace?"
The center of the room was empty. The chalk circle had been scrubbed clean off the stone by the sheer force of the implosion. There was no rift, no monster, and no golden boy. All that remained in the center of the chamber was a scorched, silk academy tie, blackened at the edges, and a faint lingering scent of Jace’s cologne.
Kaelen reached out, his fingers brushing the singed fabric. He had survived. He would graduate. He would be the greatest mage the academy had ever seen because he was the only one left who knew the cost of the dark. He clutched the tie to his chest and let out a broken, jagged sob, alone in the dark he had created.
