Bound by the Stars

The medical bay aboard the *Starling* was small, smelling of antiseptic and clean linen. The low hum of the ship’s hyper-drive vibrated gently through the hull. They had jumped to lightspeed an hour ago, leaving the Rust Coast, the mercenaries, and the past far behind.
Kaelen sat on the edge of the bio-bed, stripped of his armor and tactical suit. His massive chest and back were a patchwork of bruising and rapidly healing lacerations.
Elara stood between his knees, a damp cloth in her hand, gently wiping the grime and dried violet blood from his shoulder. Her touch was feather-light, reverent.
The silence between them was no longer tense or suffocating. It was warm, thick, and peaceful.
"Your healing factor is incredible," Elara murmured, tracing a newly closed scar across his collarbone. "You were dying, Kaelen. I watched you dying."
"A Zendari warrior without his mate is only half-alive," Kaelen replied softly, his large hands coming to rest lightly on her hips. "When you accepted the bond... when you told me you loved me... it reignited my core. You are the reason my heart beats, Elara."
Elara stopped wiping his shoulder. She dropped the cloth into a basin and looked down into his glowing golden eyes. The fear was completely gone. The terrifying expanse of 'forever' didn't seem like a cage anymore; it felt like a vast, beautiful universe she was finally ready to explore.
"I'm sorry I ran," she whispered, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. "I'm sorry I made you suffer for two years because I was too cowardly to accept what I felt."
"You are here now," Kaelen said, his voice a low, rough rumble. His thumbs gently brushed the sides of her waist. "That is all that matters."
"The artifact is secured in the cargo hold," Elara said, her voice dropping to a husky whisper as she slowly stepped closer, closing the final inch of distance between them. "We can fence it on the black market in the Core Systems. Fifty-fifty split, just like we agreed."
Kaelen looked up at her, a small, genuine smile playing on his lips. "I have no need for credits, Elara. My squad will report me missing in action. The Vanguard will assume I perished in the Vault. I am a free man."
Elara’s breath hitched. "You’d leave the Empire? For me?"
"I would burn the Empire to ash for you," he vowed softly. He reached up, threading his fingers through her auburn hair, gently pulling her face down toward his. "Where are we flying, Captain?"
Elara smiled, a radiant, unburdened expression that lit up the dim medical bay. She leaned down, resting her forehead against his, breathing in the scent of ozone, rain, and him.
"Anywhere we want," she whispered.
When his lips finally met hers, the kiss was a collision of stars. It was a promise, an apology, and a homecoming all wrapped into one explosive, passionate embrace. The mate-bond hummed between them, a tangible thread of golden energy connecting their souls, brilliant, mutual, and absolutely unbreakable.
They were bound by the stars, and finally, neither of them was running.
