Hyperspace Escape

Kaelen hauled Lyra to her feet, supporting her uninjured side, and dragged her toward the shuttle’s cockpit. Through the forward viewport, the massive, terrifying silhouette of a regime dreadnought loomed against the stars, an invisible tractor beam pulling their small shuttle inevitably toward its hangar bays.
Kaelen threw Lyra into the co-pilot’s seat and ripped the access panel off the central navigation console. Wires and circuitry sparked as he tore into the ship’s guts.
"Kaelen, what are you doing?" Lyra winced, holding her bleeding shoulder.
"Hot-wiring the manual override," Kaelen said, pulling the pulsing plasma drive from his satchel. It glowed with an unstable, angry blue light. "If I bypass the regulators and plug this directly into the hyper-drive manifold, it should generate enough raw thrust to break the tractor beam."
"It could also tear the ship in half!" Lyra shouted.
"Trust me!" Kaelen yelled back. He looked at her, his eyes burning with intense, unapologetic sincerity. "I trust you."
Lyra swallowed hard, the fear leaving her eyes. She nodded. "Do it."
Kaelen jammed the plasma drive into the exposed manifold, forcefully crossing the main power conduits.
The shuttle violently shuddered. Every alarm in the cockpit screamed at once. Outside the viewport, the stars began to bend and stretch as the immense surge of stolen energy overwhelmed the ship’s engines. The dreadnought’s tractor beam snapped like a brittle thread.
With a deafening boom that rattled Kaelen's teeth, the shuttle shot forward, tearing a hole in space and vanishing into the swirling, infinite blue tunnel of hyperspace.
The violent shaking subsided, leaving only the deep, rhythmic thrum of the warp engines.
Kaelen slumped back against the console, his chest heaving. He looked over at Lyra. She was pale, leaning heavily against the pilot's chair, but she was smiling. A real, genuine smile that reached her eyes—the first he had seen in years.
Kaelen retrieved a medical kit from the wall and knelt beside her. He carefully cut away the scorched armor, applying a heavy dose of bio-gel to the plasma burn. Lyra hissed in pain, but her uninjured hand reached out, gently cupping his cheek.
"I'm sorry," she whispered, her thumb brushing away a streak of dirt and soot from his face. "I'm so sorry for everything I put you through. For every horrible thing I said."
"It kept me alive," Kaelen replied softly, securing a bandage over the wound. He leaned into her touch, the heavy, suffocating weight of his insecurities finally dissolving into the quiet hum of the ship. "The lies are done, Lyra. We're free."
Lyra’s eyes searched his, looking for any trace of the resentment that had built up over the years. Finding none, she leaned forward.
Their lips met, desperate and bruising at first, fueled by the fading adrenaline of combat, before softening into a deep, passionate kiss. It was a promise forged in the wreckage of their past. Drifting safely in uncharted space, the struggles and the cruelty faded away, leaving only the two of them, ready to start over.
