Chapter 5
The Dark Moment
❧
A heavy, metallic *thud* echoed through the bunker.
Magnetic boots on the exterior hull. The extraction team wasn't coming from orbit. They had already arrived.
Kaelen ripped his interface cable from the console. He turned, leveling his plasma rifle at the cot.
Elara was already sitting up. She wasn't rubbing her eyes. She was holding a suppressed, high-caliber kinetic pistol, aimed directly at his chest. The warmth in her face was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, reptilian calm.
“You couldn't just leave the terminal alone, could you, Kaelen?” she said, her voice devoid of the sweet cadence she had used in the forest.
“You sold them out,” Kaelen breathed, the betrayal burning hotter than the neurotoxin. “The colonists. The transport crew. You killed them all.”
“I secured my retirement,” Elara corrected smoothly, standing up. “The colonies are dead anyway. I just expedited the process. And I needed to make it look like a corporate hit. You played your part perfectly.”
The main blast doors hissed, the heavy locking mechanisms grinding open. Four heavily armed syndicate mercenaries stepped into the bunker, their weapons raised, target-locking onto Kaelen.
He was outgunned, outmaneuvered, and deeply wounded.
“Drop the rifle, Kaelen,” Elara ordered. “You’re a professional. You know when a contract is void.”
Kaelen’s finger tightened on the trigger. He calculated the odds. He could kill her. He could pull the trigger and vaporize her chest. But the four mercs would shred him in a microsecond, and he would die knowing he had been nothing but a pawn.
He slowly lowered the plasma rifle, letting it clatter to the metal floor.
Elara smiled—a thin, bloodless expression. “You really were an excellent shield, Kaelen. Truly. Top of your class. I appreciate the sacrifice.”
She raised her pistol and shot him point-blank in the right side.
The kinetic round shattered Kaelen’s biological ribs, tearing through his liver and exiting his lower back. The force threw him against the terminal console. He collapsed to the floor in a heap of blood and grinding servos, gasping in agony.
“Finish him off,” Elara said casually to the squad leader, stepping over Kaelen’s bleeding body. “I’m heading to the cliffside. Prep the shuttle.”
She didn't look back as she walked out into the howling wind.
