The Eden Spire

The Hunter-Drone did not follow.
Having expended the entirety of its remaining energy matrix attempting to destroy an indestructible target, its crimson optic flickered and died. The mechanical predator powered down, sinking slowly into the silt and darkness of the Drowned Subways.
Leo broke the surface of the water at the base of a dry, concrete service shaft. He hauled Maya onto the rusted metal grating, coughing and gasping for air.
Maya rolled onto her side, hacking up toxic water, but she was breathing. She was alive.
Leo collapsed beside her, staring up at the long, vertical ladder that led to the crack in the surface streets. Above them, a single, brilliant shaft of warm, golden sunlight pierced the gloom.
He sat up and looked down at his hands. The golden grid had faded beneath his skin, leaving him looking entirely normal. He wasn't burnt. He wasn't bleeding. He was exactly the same teenager he had been an hour ago, but the terrifying weight of his anxiety was completely gone.
He had survived the unsurvivable. He had stood between death and the person he loved, and he hadn't broken.
Maya sat up, rubbing her bruised leg. She looked at the ruined, burnt shreds of his jacket, and then up at his unscarred face. A small, exhausted smile broke across her face.
"See?" she whispered, her voice hoarse. "A shield."
Leo looked at her, and for the first time in his life, he smiled without a shadow of fear in his eyes. He didn't know why he had the Aegis markers. He didn't know what the future held, or what other nightmares waited for them on the surface.
But it didn't matter anymore. He was no longer a victim of the apocalypse. He was built to outlast it.
Leo stood up, the warm shaft of sunlight illuminating his face. He reached down, offering his invincible hand to his sister.
"Come on," Leo said, his voice ringing with a quiet, unshakeable confidence. "Let's go find the Eden Spire."
Maya took his hand, and together, they began the long climb out of the dark, stepping upward into the sun.
