Chapter 5
The Solo
❧
It wasn't a polite, sustained baritone harmony. It wasn't a carefully modulated note designed to create a flat, static wall.
It was a raw, untrained, emotionally devastating belt. It was a rock-and-roll scream ripped from the bottom of his soul, fueled by years of pent-up frustration, terror, and fury. It was loud, it was pitchy, and it was glorious.
The Aether-Harmonics reacted violently to the unbridled emotion.
The magic didn't know what to do with the sheer kinetic fury of the vocalization. Instead of manifesting as a smooth blue buckler, the air around Ren shattered into a localized maelstrom of jagged, blinding neon-blue light.
The hard-light didn't form a shield. It fractured outward, condensing into dozens of razor-sharp, glowing blue kinetic spears floating in the air around him.
Ren stared at his glowing hands, his voice still sustaining the ferocious note. He wasn't a defensive class. He had just been holding himself back, trying to fit into the neat, safe little box the agency had built for him.
The Leviathan roared, lunging downward through the ceiling, its grinding maw aimed directly at Jax.
Ren threw his arm forward, sweeping his hand like a conductor bringing in the brass section.
The barrage of hard-light spears launched forward with the speed of a railgun.
They slammed into the Leviathan's crystalline face. The kinetic impact was explosive. The blue spears shattered the beast's tuning-fork crown, sending jagged shards of black crystal flying across the lobby.
The Leviathan shrieked in agony, recoiling wildly, thrashing its massive body against the structural pillars of the broadcast tower. The building groaned, dust pouring from the ceiling.
Ren didn't stop. He broke into a dead sprint across the lobby, drawing the beast's attention away from Jax.
He fell into the rhythm of the Duet Kata, but he was performing both parts. He leaped over a sweeping strike from the beast's tail, hitting a sharp, staccato high note. Three more blue spears materialized and drove themselves into the beast's armored flank.
The monster snapped its jaws at him. Ren slid on his knees across the polished marble floor, belting a deep, guttural slide. A jagged, angled ramp of blue hard-light manifested just in time to deflect the beast's teeth, sending the monster crashing headfirst into the elevator banks.
It was a brutal, magical-martial-arts dance. Ren was moving with a fluid, chaotic grace he had never shown in the pristine training rooms. He was improvising. He was fighting dirty. He was singing his lungs out, turning his voice into a relentless, kinetic shotgun.
He bounced off walls, launching spears of light, tearing through the Leviathan's armor layer by layer. The lobby was a flashing strobe-light of neon blue and sickly purple.
But the beast was massive. It whipped its tail around in a blind frenzy, catching Ren squarely in the chest.
Ren was thrown across the room, crashing hard into a structural support column. He slumped to the floor, gasping for air, the taste of blood thick in his mouth. The magic faded. The room plunged back into darkness.
The Leviathan, half of its face shattered and glowing with leaking purple aether, turned its eyeless gaze toward Ren. It reared up, preparing to bring its massive bulk down to crush him entirely.
Ren tried to pull air into his bruised lungs to sing, but he couldn't. He was tapped out.
From the corner of the room, a heavy, metallic *CLANG* echoed.
Ren weakly turned his head.
Jax had dragged himself across the floor. He had picked up a heavy, rusted iron pipe from the debris. He couldn't sing, but he was slamming the pipe against the concrete wall with everything he had left.
* CLANG. CLANG. CLANG-CLANG. CLANG.* The beat.
Jax was bleeding, pale as a ghost, but his eyes were burning with a fierce, unwavering belief. He wasn't fighting the monster. He was accompanying Ren. He was the backup.
The sound of the beat cut through Ren’s exhaustion. It was an anchor. It was a lifeline.
Ren locked eyes with Jax. He saw the trust. He felt the rhythm pulse in his own blood.
Ren grabbed the structural column and hauled himself to his feet. He planted his boots wide. He closed his eyes, pulling every last reserve of oxygen, adrenaline, and magic into his chest.
The Leviathan lunged, its maw opening wide to consume him.
Ren opened his eyes and unleashed the highest, loudest, most devastating crescendo of his entire life.
It wasn't a spear this time. It was a localized sonic boom of pure, blinding blue hard-light. The blast erupted from Ren in a massive, expanding sphere of kinetic force.
It caught the Leviathan mid-lunge. The sheer acoustic power of the blast traveled straight down the beast's open throat, bypassing its armor entirely.
The monster expanded, its internal crystalline structure screaming under the pressure, and then it violently, spectacularly detonated.
A shower of purple dust and shattered black glass rained down over the entire lobby.
But the concussive force of Ren’s crescendo didn't stop there. It slammed into the already weakened structural pillars of the broadcast tower.
The concrete buckled. The steel rebar snapped.
"Jax!" Ren screamed, diving across the floor and throwing his body over the injured Center just as the ceiling began to cave in.
The world dissolved into a deafening roar of collapsing concrete, choking dust, and absolute darkness.
