Chapter 7

The Emperor's Gala

The Imperial Aether-Barge was a floating palace of gold filigree and glowing jade, tethered a mile above the city by massive aether-cables. The main deck was an open-air amphitheater, shielded from the wind by an invisible kinetic dome.
The Emperor, draped in golden robes, sat on a raised dais, surrounded by the highest nobility of Xin-Jing. Lord Shen sat in the front row, his face a mask of smug triumph.
Mei walked onto the center stage.
She wore a gown of pure, icy white silk. Her face was pale, devoid of emotion. She sat at the magnificent grand clockwork-piano, her fingers resting lightly on the crystal keys. She felt entirely hollow. She was about to sell her soul to save her family.
She raised her hands. She began to play the D-minor classical sonata Shen had demanded.
It was perfect. It was cold. It was a beautiful, tragic surrender. The nobility nodded in polite, silent approval. Shen smiled.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic *CLANG* echoed from the upper rigging of the barge.
The nobles gasped, looking up.
Standing on the edge of a massive brass exhaust pipe, fifty feet above the stage, silhouetted against the bursting fireworks, was Jin.
He wore his patched coat, grinning like a madman. In his hands was a terrifying, Frankenstein-esque contraption. His steam-erhu was bound together with heavy leather straps and duct tape. The brass boiler had been bypassed. In its place was a heavy iron pipe, packed with firecracker powder, wired to a spark-striker on his thumb.
"Hey, Princess!" Jin’s voice boomed over the hushed crowd, amplified by the barge's acoustics. "You forgot your rhythm section!"
Mei’s hands slammed onto the keys in shock. "Jin?" she breathed, her heart leaping into her throat.
"Guards!" Lord Shen roared, leaping to his feet, his face purple with rage. "Shoot that street rat out of the sky!"
Imperial guards rushed onto the deck, raising their aether-rifles.
Jin didn't run. He didn't hide. He ignited the spark-striker.
* BOOM.*
A controlled explosion ripped from the iron pipe of his erhu. The sheer pressure forced a terrifying, screaming, impossibly loud note from the strings. It sounded like a dragon waking up.
Jin leapt from the pipe, sliding down a velvet banner, playing a wild, descending scale as he fell. The music was deafening, chaotic, and brimming with undeniable, explosive life. He hit the stage, rolling to his feet right next to Mei's piano, and immediately launched into the fierce, sweeping folk melody they had composed in the Night Market.
"What are you doing?!" Mei yelled over the noise, tears of pure, shocked joy springing to her eyes. "He's going to kill you!"
"Then let's give him a show to remember!" Jin yelled back, slamming his bow against the strings. *BOOM.* Another firecracker charge detonated, sending a shower of sparks over the front row of nobles, who shrieked and shielded their faces.
Mei looked at Jin. She saw the absolute, terrifying freedom in his eyes. He had risked everything—his freedom, his life—just to give her a chance to play her own music.
The rigid armor around Mei’s heart shattered completely.
She turned back to the piano. She didn't play the sonata. She slammed her hands down, striking a massive, dissonant chord that rippled through the glass floor of the stage. She joined his melody.
The duet was a revelation. It wasn't a polite conversation; it was a riot.
Jin played with manic, desperate energy, his erhu spitting fire and smoke. Mei answered with thunderous, cascading runs on the piano, abandoning precision for pure, unadulterated passion. The clash of the street and the aristocracy, the raw power of the steam and the crystal.
The music swelled, building into a frenzied, impossible crescendo. The kinetic energy was so intense that the aether-lamps on the barge began to flicker and overload.
Mei was laughing. She couldn't stop. She was playing harder and faster than she ever had in her life, tears streaming down her face, laughing into the chaos.
"Arrest them!" Shen screamed, but the guards were frozen, mesmerized by the sheer, overwhelming power of the performance.
Jin hit the final, soaring high note. He triggered the last, massive charge of firecracker powder.
* KRA-KOOM.*
The acoustic shockwave blasted outward. The soundproof glass windows of the VIP booths shattered inward, raining crystalline shards over the terrified nobility. The invisible kinetic dome shielding the deck flickered and collapsed, letting the freezing, wind-whipped air of the New Year rush in.
The performance ended in stunned, ringing silence.
Jin and Mei stood on the stage, chest heaving, smoke curling from Jin’s ruined instrument. They looked at each other, grinning like absolute lunatics.
"Get them!" Shen shrieked, pointing his cane.
The Imperial Guards finally snapped out of their daze and charged the stage, bayonets fixed.
"Time to go, Princess," Jin said.
Mei didn't hesitate. She grabbed Jin’s hand. They sprinted toward the edge of the floating barge.
"Are you insane?" Mei laughed as they reached the railing, looking down at the dizzying drop to the city below.
"I'm a musician!" Jin yelled. He kicked open a supply locker near the railing and hauled out a heavy, folded contraption of bamboo and reinforced silk—an emergency evacuation glider.
He strapped it over his shoulders and grabbed Mei around the waist.
"Hold your breath!" Jin shouted.
They vaulted over the railing, plummeting into the dark void.
