Chapter 8
The President's Shadow
❧
Two weeks later, the Iron Republic was a changed city.
Minister Thorne and the Shadow Cabinet had been arrested, their syndicate ties exposed by the data drives Nyx had recovered during the Parliament fight. The corrupt hold on the city was broken.
Nyx stood on the balcony of the Presidential Spire, looking out over the smog-free dawn. She wore her standard leather trench coat and combat boots. A heavy duffel bag rested at her feet.
The heavy glass doors slid open behind her. Silas stepped out into the crisp morning air. He walked without his cane now, though he moved a little stiffer than before.
He walked up beside her, placing a heavy, sealed folder on the brass railing.
"Your pardon," Silas said softly. "Signed, sealed, and ratified by the new Senate. Your record is entirely clean, Miss Corvus. You are a free woman. The ten million credits have been transferred to a secure account."
Nyx stared at the folder. It was everything she had fought for. Freedom. Safety. The ability to walk away from the violence.
"Thank you, Silas," she said, her voice tight. She didn't reach for the folder. "The job is done. The contract is fulfilled."
"It is," Silas agreed. He turned to face her, his blue eyes searching her face. "So why are you packed?"
"I don't belong in the Spire, Silas. I'm a pit fighter. I'm a killer. I played the fake fiancée to keep you alive, but the show is over. You need to find a real First Lady. Someone who wears silk without tearing it, and someone who doesn't have clockwork bolted to her bones."
Silas didn't argue. He simply reached out and gently pushed the duffel bag over with the toe of his immaculate shoe.
"I don't want a fake fiancée, Nyx," Silas said, stepping into her space, entirely unbothered by the weapons strapped to her thighs. "And I don't want a bodyguard. I want the woman who dropped out of a stained-glass window to save my life. I want the woman who scares the living hell out of corrupt politicians. I want you."
Nyx’s breath hitched. She looked up at him, her cynical defenses completely stripped away. "Silas, I'm dangerous."
"I know," Silas smiled, a genuine, breathtaking expression. He reached up, his warm hands cupping her face, his thumbs gently tracing the scars on her cheeks. "That is exactly why I need you by my side. The Republic needs a shield, Nyx. And I need my partner."
Nyx stared into his eyes, seeing the unyielding truth in them. He wasn't using her. He wasn't setting a trap. He was offering her a home.
Slowly, Nyx reached out, grabbing the lapels of his suit coat, and pulled him down into a fierce, desperate kiss. Silas responded instantly, his arms wrapping tightly around her waist, anchoring her to him. The kiss tasted of ozone, new beginnings, and absolute loyalty.
When they finally broke apart, Nyx let out a breathless laugh, resting her forehead against his.
"Fine," the Viper whispered into the morning air. "But I'm not wearing the heels."
"Deal," the President replied.
