Chapter 3

The Under-Market

Three days passed. The rain never stopped. Kael hid out in the apartment above the clinic, a captive of his own healing body. He was a terrible patient.
"I need replacement lateral servos," Kael grunted, pacing the small room like a caged panther. His left arm was wrapped in bandages, completely immobile.
"I don't have military-grade servos just lying around," Elara snapped, exhausted from three sleepless nights staring at the encrypted drive. "I patch up delivery bots and low-level street thugs. If you want Aegis-tier tech, we have to go to the Under-Market."
Kael stopped pacing, his silver eye fixing on her. "It's too dangerous. The corporate hounds are looking for me."
"Then you stay here," Elara said, grabbing her coat. "I know the Market. I can get what you need."
"You aren't going alone," Kael replied instantly, his voice brokering no argument.
The Under-Market was a sprawling, multi-tiered black market built into the hollowed-out ruins of an old subterranean transit hub. It only operated in the dead of night, illuminated by the harsh glare of halogen work lights and the neon glow of illicit stalls. It was chaotic, vibrant, and incredibly dangerous.
Elara navigated the dense, shifting crowds with practiced ease, her hood pulled low. Kael stayed close behind her, a towering, brooding shadow. Despite his injury, his mere presence radiated a lethal warning that parted the crowds around them.
"Here," Elara muttered, ducking into a cramped stall overflowing with salvaged cybernetics. The vendor, a heavily augmented cyborg named Rix, narrowed his eyes at Kael.
"You bring a lot of heat, El," Rix rasped. "Corpsec has been tossing the upper sectors."
"I just need a Class-4 lateral servo array, Rix. Clean. No tracking tags," Elara said, slamming a cred-stick on the counter. It was the last of her emergency funds.
Rix grunted, rummaging through a bin before tossing a grease-stained servo unit onto the counter. "Don't let the hounds trace this back to me."
As they turned to leave, three men blocking the narrow aisle stopped them. They wore the distinct, ragged colors of the Rust-Skulls syndicate—the gang Elara owed money to.
"Well, well," the lead thug sneered, his mechanical jaw clicking. "Little Elara out shopping while her debts accrue interest. The boss is getting impatient."
Elara’s heart seized. "I told you I'd have the credits by the end of the month."
The thug stepped forward, reaching for her. "Maybe we take some collateral tonight."
Before the thug’s hand could make contact, Kael moved. Despite his ruined arm, he was blindingly fast. His good right hand shot out, grabbing the thug by the mechanical jaw and slamming him brutally against the rusted metal wall of the stall. The metal groaned under the impact.
The other two thugs reached for their weapons, but Kael’s silver optic flared. He didn't draw a gun; the sheer, terrifying promise of violence in his posture froze them in their tracks.
"Walk away," Kael whispered to the thug pinned against the wall. His voice was a low, terrifying rumble that carried over the noise of the market. "Or I'll rip this jaw off and make you eat it."
Kael let go. The thug crumpled, gasping. The three gang members scrambled backward, vanishing into the crowd.
Elara stood frozen, her pulse roaring in her ears. Kael turned to her, his jaw tight. "Are you hurt?"
"No," Elara breathed. "You didn't have to do that. They'll just come back harder."
"They won't," Kael said softly. "Let's go home."
