Chapter 1

The Iron Cell

The heavy, suffocating layers of Clara’s bridal gown rustled against the grated metal floors of the lower decks. Up on the observation levels of the interstellar cruiser *Aegis*, the elite passengers were celebrating Earth-Standard Christmas Eve, toasting to Clara’s impending nuptials with crystal flutes of zero-g champagne. Clara, however, felt like she was marching toward an execution.
She was to be married to Governor Thorne of the ice planet Celes-Prime—a man three times her age, known for his ruthless mining monopolies and his utter lack of empathy. Her bankrupt family had practically sold her to clear their debts, trading her freedom for a shipment of unrefined rhodium.
Desperate to escape the glittering, suffocating gala and the calculating stares of her fiancé’s associates, Clara had slipped past the security droids and descended into the bowels of the ship. She wandered until she found the old security sector. It was an obsolete part of the ship, scheduled for retrofitting, and at its end sat the brig—a literal high-tech dungeon of reinforced titanium, thick grating, and shadows.
She stepped inside the open cell, seeking only the comfort of the absolute silence.
"Careful with that dress, Princess. The grease stains don't come out."
Clara jumped, clutching the skirts of her stardust-lace gown. Sitting on the floor in the darkest corner of the cell was a young man in stained, patched coveralls. His hands were coated in engine oil, his dark hair was a messy mop, and a smudge of carbon marked his cheek. He was hunched over a dismantled piece of ship tech, twisting a bundle of copper wiring with a pair of rusted pliers.
It was Finn. Clara had seen him a few times in the corridors, usually being yelled at by the upper-deck officers or mocked by the elite security forces. They called him a loser—a mechanic with no credits, no ambition, and no future.
"What are you doing in here?" Clara demanded, trying to steady her racing heart.
"Hiding," Finn said casually, not looking up from his wires. "The Chief Engineer is looking for someone to clean the plasma vents. And I'm trying to fix this old light-synthesizer. It's Christmas Eve. Figured I'd make myself a decoration."
Clara took a step backward, suddenly realizing how entirely out of place she was. "I should go. If Governor Thorne finds out I'm down here with a—"
Before she could finish her sentence, a loud, metallic screech echoed through the corridor. The automated, rusty blast doors of the brig violently shuddered. Sparks rained down from the overhead sensor, and with a deafening *CLANG*, the heavy titanium doors slammed completely shut.
Clara froze. She rushed to the thick iron grating, wrapping her manicured hands around the bars and pushing. "No. No, no, no! Open!"
Finn set his pliers down and slowly wiped his hands on a rag. He walked over to the door, examined the sparking control panel on the outside, and sighed. "Well, that's not good. The primary actuator just fried. We're locked in."
"Locked in?" Clara’s voice pitched upward in pure panic. "You have to get us out! The docking sequence begins in six hours! The Governor will be waiting for me in the grand hall! If I'm not there, he'll ruin my family!"
"I don't have my heavy tools, Princess," Finn said, leaning back against the cold wall of the dungeon. "And the comms down here have been dead since the ship left orbit. We aren't getting out until a patrol comes by, and on Christmas Eve, that could be tomorrow morning."
Clara slid down the bars of the cell, the massive, expensive layers of her wedding dress pooling around her on the filthy floor. She buried her face in her hands, entirely overwhelmed by the nightmare her life had become.
