The Override

The Level 84 Bio-Data Archive was a monument to clinical perfection. Located in the suffocating mid-levels of the Sovereign Consortium’s central mega-spire, the sprawling office was a labyrinth of frosted glass cubicles and towering black quantum processors. At exactly midnight, the only sound was the omnipresent, bone-rattling hum of the servers cooling themselves. The lighting was dialed down to a harsh, neon-drenched violet, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished linoleum.
Dr. Aris Thorne sat alone at terminal 4-B, the pale glow of the holographic display reflecting in their tired, bloodshot eyes. They were strictly prohibited from using company time for personal projects, but the graveyard shift offered a sanctuary of isolation. Aris’s fingers flew across the haptic keyboard, running yet another off-the-books simulation on the cellular degradation matrix of a disease the lower sectors called "The Rust."
The terminal beeped a sharp, negative tone. *Simulation Failed. Cellular crystallization at 94%. Subject deceased.*
Aris exhaled a ragged breath and rubbed their temples. It was the same result, over and over. The Rust was a death sentence. It had taken Aris’s younger sister six months ago, turning her veins into brittle, crystallized stone while the Sovereign Consortium’s board denied funding for a cure, claiming the disease was a natural "population stabilizer."
Aris reached for their cooling cup of synthetic coffee when the impossible happened.
The heavy, biometric security doors at the far end of the office—doors rated to withstand a low-yield explosive—did not slide open. They violently shuddered, grinding against their tracks with a shrieking metallic groan. The automated security voice chimed through the overhead speakers, *"Override authorized. Sovereign Priority Alpha."*
Aris froze, heart hammering against their ribs. Nobody came to Level 84 at midnight.
A figure stumbled through the ruined doors, leaning heavily against the frosted glass of the nearest cubicle. He was dressed in the nondescript, grimy clothing of a lower-sector worker, a dark hood pulled low over his face. But as he staggered forward, bathed in the violet neon of the office, Aris saw the fluid dripping from his side. It wasn't the dark, crimson blood of a common citizen. It was a glowing, luminescent synthetic blue.
* Sovereign blood.* The engineered lifeblood of the ruling elite.
The figure collapsed to his knees, his hood falling back. Aris gasped, standing up so fast their chair clattered to the floor. It was a face broadcast on a billion screens across the planet, though it was currently pale, sweating, and contorted in agony.
Prince Kaelen of the Sovereign Consortium.
Kaelen lifted his head, his piercing silver eyes locking onto Aris across the rows of silent servers. He coughed, a violent, rattling sound, and spat a mouthful of blue fluid onto the pristine floor.
"Terminal 4-B," Kaelen rasped, his voice trembling. "Dr... Thorne. You're the one... running the unauthorized simulations."
Before Aris could answer, the Prince’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed face-first onto the linoleum, out cold.
