Chapter 4
Dead Static
❧
Panic, raw and absolute, shattered Julian's clinical facade.
"Chloe!" he screamed over the deafening, synthesized wailing. He slammed his fists onto the console. "Abort! Abort transfer! Reverse download!"
* ERROR: Biological vessel unresponsive. Download impossible.*
He looked frantically through the glass of the isolation rig. Chloe's body lay there, perfectly still, perfectly dead. Her heart was stopped. Her brain was effectively wiped, 98% of its synaptic architecture already transferred and currently shredding itself in the servers below his feet. There was nowhere for her to go back to.
"Stop!" Julian shrieked, tears blurring his vision. He violently punched the tempered glass of the primary monitor. The screen cracked, a spiderweb of fractures obscuring the cascading red error logs, cutting his knuckles to the bone. Blood smeared across the glass, a stark, wet red against the digital nightmare.
"System halt! Delete the matrix! Just delete it!" he begged the machine, his arrogance completely broken, replaced by the pathetic, weeping terror of a little boy who had broken his sister's favorite toy. Only he hadn't broken a toy. He had broken her soul.
* ERROR: Core locked. Consciousness fragmented. Deletion protocol overridden by active loop.*
The synthesized scream looped. It didn't stop to take a breath, because it had no lungs. It was an infinite, sustained broadcast of localized digital hell.
"J-J-Jules... w-w-h-here... cold..."
Julian fell to his knees, his bloody hands pulling at his own hair. He had refused to hold her hand while she died peacefully on her own terms. He had demanded she live forever on his. And now, he had succeeded. He had granted her immortality—an immortality composed entirely of a corrupted, agonizing system error.
The backup generators finally kicked in, stabilizing the room's lighting, but the damage was irreversible. The data stream was hopelessly, permanently corrupted.
Julian dragged himself over to the manual hardline disconnect. With a heavy, metallic *clank*, he yanked the massive power coupling from the audio interface.
The horrific screaming cut off instantly.
The sudden silence in the sub-zero chamber was heavier than the noise had been. It pressed down on Julian's shoulders like a physical weight. He looked up at the shattered, blood-smeared monitors. The red error messages were still scrolling. The process was still running in the locked core. She was still screaming in the dark; he had just muted the speakers so he wouldn't have to hear it.
Julian Vance knelt alone on the freezing metal floor of the server room. Above him, the decaying American city continued its slow, inevitable crawl toward death. And beneath him, trapped in the humming quantum void by a brother’s supreme hubris, Chloe would continue to die forever.
