Chapter 6
The Vessel Fills
❧
The crypt smelled of ancient dust, copper, and profound, suffocating evil. The only light came from dozens of black candles arranged in a wide circle on the floor.
In the center of the circle stood Silas Harrowgate.
He was dressed in heavily embroidered ceremonial robes, his pale eyes burning with a manic, triumphant light. He held a jagged obsidian dagger in one hand, and a heavy silver chalice in the other.
"Welcome, Arthur," Silas whispered, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "The hollowing is complete. It is time for the eviction."
Arthur backed against the cold iron doors, weeping openly, his ambition completely shattered, his mind a fractured wasteland of terror. "Please," he whimpered. "Take the money. I don't want it. Just let me go."
"The money was merely the bait, you foolish boy," Silas sneered. He raised his arms, and began to chant in the guttural, demonic language Arthur had seen on his drafts. The air in the crypt grew impossibly thick, vibrating with a dark, crushing frequency.
From the shadows of the alcoves lining the walls, figures began to emerge.
They were translucent, glowing with a sickly, bruised light. They were men, dressed in the fashions of decades past—the 1920s, the 1890s, the 1850s. Their faces were twisted in masks of eternal, silent agony. They were the previous sons-in-law. The previous vessels.
They drifted toward Arthur, their spectral hands reaching out.
Arthur screamed, trying to fight them off, but their hands passed through his physical body, grasping directly onto his soul. The cold was absolute. They dragged him, kicking and thrashing, into the center of the candlelit circle, forcing him to his knees before Silas.
Silas looked down at the broken, hollowed man. He smiled.
"Open," Silas commanded.
The entity did not come from the shadows; it came from the stone beneath Arthur. A column of pure, roaring black smoke, thick with the smell of sulfur and burning hair, erupted from the floor. It wrapped around Arthur, forcing its way down his throat, into his eyes, into his very pores.
The pain was not physical. It was the sensation of being erased.
Arthur felt his consciousness, his memories, his very identity, being violently ripped from the moorings of his flesh. He screamed, but it wasn't his mouth making the sound anymore.
With a sickening, tearing sound that resonated in the spiritual plane, Arthur Pendelton was evicted.
He found himself floating near the arched ceiling of the crypt, bodiless, weightless, and trapped. He was a specter, just like the others who now wailed silently in the shadows.
Below him, the black smoke settled.
Arthur watched in horror as his own body slowly stood up from the stone floor. The posture was wrong—too rigid, too predatory. The face was his, but the expression was entirely alien. The entity wearing Arthur’s flesh rolled its shoulders, stretching limbs it hadn't inhabited in a century.
The creature opened Arthur's eyes. They were no longer the desperate, insecure eyes of an ambitious architect. They were solid, fathomless black.
Silas bowed deeply. "Welcome back, my Lord."
Arthur's body smiled a cruel, sadistic smile that belonged to a demon. "You have done well, Silas. The vessel is strong. The mind was delightfully fragile."
The heavy iron doors of the crypt groaned open. Evelyn stepped inside, her face alight with genuine adoration. She walked over to the creature wearing her husband's skin and kissed him deeply, passionately, on the mouth.
"Are you ready to return to the house?" she asked.
"I am," the demon replied in Arthur's voice. "There is much work to be done in the world above."
Arm in arm, the demon, Evelyn, and Silas Harrowgate walked out of the crypt, leaving the iron doors open to the raging storm.
Trapped against the stone ceiling, chained to the darkness by the ancient magic of the pact, the invisible specter of Arthur Pendelton opened his spectral mouth and joined the eternal, silent scream of the discarded souls, doomed to watch the Harrowgate legacy thrive forever.
