The Domain of Rest

The demon shrieked—a sound like dialing modems and shattering glass—and lunged.
Silas met the charge. His scythe flared with violet light as he struck the demon’s shadowy mass. The impact sent a shockwave through the office, blowing the glass windows outward into the eternal twilight.
Chloe scrambled backward, pressing herself against the far wall.
Silas was fast, his centuries of training evident in every fluid, lethal strike. But the demon was erratic, feeding on the very anxiety its presence generated. It absorbed Silas's magical blows, converting the kinetic energy into more speed.
With a sickening crack, one of the demon’s serrated limbs slipped past Silas's guard and struck him in the chest. Silas was thrown across the room, crashing through his own desk in a shower of splintered wood and scattered files. He tried to rise, but his form flickered—his soul was fracturing under the chaotic strain.
The demon ignored him, turning its attention to Chloe. It loomed over her, its frantic aura making Chloe's non-existent heart hammer against her ribs. It reached out with a claw of vibrating static.
Chloe looked at Silas. The uptight, infuriating warden was bleeding a faint blue essence, struggling to lift his scythe to protect her. He was the only person in this dreary afterlife who had actually paid attention to her, who brought her spectral coffee, who—despite his complaining—always made sure she had a quiet place to sit when the patrols got too loud.
If she let this demon win, Silas would be destroyed. And worse, she would never, ever get a good night's sleep again.
"You know what?" Chloe stood up. "I've had enough of this."
The demon paused, confused by the sudden lack of fear.
Chloe closed her eyes. She stopped suppressing the Maiden's mark and let it sync with her own soul. The lotus tattoo flared, burning with a brilliant, blinding silver light. But it wasn't a light of holy retribution or aggressive power.
It was the light of a Sunday morning rainstorm. It was the profound, heavy peace of a completed to-do list.
"Domain of Rest," Chloe whispered.
The air in the office went completely still. The frantic, strobing panic of the demon's aura slammed into a wall of absolute, crushing tranquility. The energy expanding from Chloe was immense, a tidal wave of cozy, irresistible lethargy.
The demon shrieked, but the sound was muffled, as if submerged under heavy blankets. It tried to thrash, to attack, but its movements became sluggish. The chaotic static of its form began to smooth out, softening into a dull, heavy gray.
"You're tired," Chloe commanded, stepping forward. Her voice echoed with the ancient power of the Maiden, but the tone was that of a mother enforcing a naptime. "You have nowhere to be. You have nothing to do. Go. To. Sleep."
The weight of her magic pressed down on the demon. It buckled. Its extra limbs folded in on themselves. The creature let out one final, long, rattling sigh, and collapsed to the floor. The shadowy mass solidified into a dense, smooth stone—a petrified monument to an eternal coma.
The Abyssal energy in the room dissipated. The silence that followed was soft and peaceful.
Chloe swayed on her feet, the silver light fading from her chest. She let out a massive yawn and promptly collapsed backward.
Before she hit the floor, Silas was there. He caught her, his suit rumpled, his hair a mess, but his arms strong and steady.
"You did it," he breathed, staring at the petrified demon, then down at her. "You stabilized the rift. You saved the Bureau."
"Tell the Bureau..." Chloe mumbled, her eyes slipping shut, "to lose my number."
