The Spectral Sleep

The afterlife, as it turned out, was not a fiery pit of brimstone, nor was it an ethereal expanse of pearly gates and fluffy clouds. It was, rather disappointingly, a perpetually overcast, Sunday-afternoon iteration of a mid-sized Pacific Northwest city. The air smelled faintly of damp asphalt and stale coffee.
For Chloe Vance, it was paradise.
At exactly twenty-four years and three months old, Chloe’s heart had simply given up the ghost during a grueling seventy-hour work week, surrounded by empty energy drink cans and a spreadsheet that refused to balance. Now, free from the tyranny of alarm clocks, micro-managing bosses, and the crushing weight of modern capitalism, she had found her heaven: The Spectral Mattress Firm.
It sat abandoned on a spectral strip mall, forever illuminated by the humming buzz of fluorescent lights. Chloe was currently curled up on a Queen-sized display model of what appeared to be celestial memory foam. She was wearing the oversized gray sweatpants and faded college t-shirt she had died in.
She inhaled deeply, the nonexistent breath filling her phantom lungs, and prepared to sleep for the next three to four centuries.
"Get up."
The voice was sharp, masculine, and carried the distinct, irritating cadence of middle management. Chloe squeezed her eyes shut, burrowing deeper into the phantom pillows. "I am off the clock. Forever. Leave your message at the beep."
"This is not a negotiation, soul designation eight-four-two." A sharp rap of something metallic struck the footboard of the bed. "Up."
Chloe cracked one eye open. Standing at the foot of her bed was a man who looked like he took the concept of death far too seriously. He wore a meticulously tailored black suit that seemed woven from midnight itself. His tie was perfectly knotted, his dark hair immaculately swept back, and his eyes were a piercing, exhausting shade of ice blue. He held a sleek, obsidian cane that pulsed with a faint, violet light.
"Who are you, and why are you interrupting my PTO?" Chloe grumbled, sitting up at a glacial pace.
"I am Silas. Occult Warden and High Psychopomp of the Obsidian Bureau," he said, his posture so rigid he looked like he might snap in half if he bent over. "And you are not on PTO. You are trespassing in a Class-Three Residual Zone."
"It's a mattress store, Silas," Chloe deadpanned. "And I'm dead. What are they going to do, arrest my ghost?"
Silas’s jaw tightened. He stepped forward, raising his cane. The violet crystal at its tip flared, casting a harsh light over Chloe. As the light hit her, a glowing, intricate sigil burned through the fabric of her t-shirt, hovering right over her heart. It looked like a blooming lotus wrapped in thorns.
Silas froze. The irritation bled from his face, replaced by a profound, horrifying realization. "By the Founders," he whispered. "You have the mark."
"I have a what now?" Chloe looked down at the glowing tattoo. "Oh, great. Post-mortem hives."
"It is the Mark of the Maiden," Silas said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with sudden, unbearable reverence. "You are the legendary soul destined to seal the Abyssal Rift. You are the Threshold Maiden. The fate of the Sub-Ethereal Plane rests on your shoulders."
Chloe stared at him. She looked at the glowing mark, then back at the perfectly manicured, impossibly tense warden. She slowly pulled the comforter up to her chin.
"No," she said softly.
"No?" Silas echoed, blinking.
"No. I did my time. I gave at the office. I literally died for my job. I am not saving a plane of existence. Find another Maiden." Chloe rolled over, turning her back to him. "Now, turn off the lights on your way out. The humming gives me a headache."
