Chapter 3
The Flooded Vault
❧
The further Elara descended, the more the architecture of the monastery seemed to warp. The stone steps grew jagged and uneven, slick with thick, black seawater that cascaded downward like a silent, underground waterfall. The stench of the dead ocean was so intense it made her eyes water and her throat burn.
She reached the bottom of the stairwell and stepped out into the archives.
The vault was vast, its ceiling lost in oppressive shadows. Towering wooden shelves, bowing under the weight of ancient manuscripts, formed a maze of narrow aisles. But the floor was gone.
The entire sub-basement was flooded. Knee-deep, pitch-black water filled the cavernous space. It was completely still, acting as a flawless, terrifying mirror.
"Rowan!" Elara called out, her voice swallowed instantly by the vast, unnatural acoustics of the room.
A faint, sickly green bioluminescence flickered from the center of the vault. Elara waded into the freezing water. The cold was agonizing, biting into her calves like physical teeth. As she pushed past the rotting wooden shelves, the shadows cast by the green light began to behave impossibly. They stretched and folded at non-Euclidean angles, detaching from the shelves and writhing against the damp stone walls like massive, spectral tentacles.
In the clearing at the center of the archives stood Rowan.
He was waist-deep in the black water, shivering uncontrollably. In his hands, he held the grey-hide grimoire from the scriptorium. He was reading aloud, his voice a jagged, guttural chant that echoed with the force of a crashing tide.
* Ph'nglui mglw'nafh...*
The water around him was boiling, frothing with unseen movement. Beneath the surface, Elara could see massive, pale shapes moving—thick, rubbery appendages sliding over one another in a terrifying, hypnotic knot.
Rowan was not just reading the text; he was acting as a conduit, translating the eldritch syllables into reality, pulling the abyss into the basement of the world.
