Chapter 2
The Terms of the Deep

Julian approached a crystal decanter resting on a geometric obsidian table. He poured a measure of amber liquid into two glasses. His movements were impossibly smooth, lacking the micro-hesitations of human muscle and bone. It was like watching water flow uphill.
"I am a businessman," Julian murmured, picking up the glasses and walking toward her. He offered her one. Harper hesitated before taking it, her fingers brushing his. His skin was unnaturally cold, sending a jolt of electricity straight down her spine. "I deal in transactions. You desire my power. You want me to eradicate the vermin chasing you and grant you absolute protection."
"Yes," Harper said, taking a burning swallow of the liquor. It tasted like smoke and sea salt.
Julian stepped closer, invading her personal space. He was so tall, so impossibly broad, that he eclipsed the city lights behind him. "And what do you offer in return? That idol is a toy. A crude piece of rock carved by madmen who do not even understand the depths they pray to."
Harper’s breath hitched. "I can find other artifacts. I'm the best antiquarian in the underground. I can be an asset to your... operations."
Julian chuckled, a low, vibrating sound that made the hairs on Harper’s arms stand on end. He reached out, a single, cold finger tracing the line of her jaw, tilting her face up to meet his gaze. The scent of ozone and crushing ocean depths washed over her, intoxicating and terrifying.
"I do not need a thief, little human," Julian said softly. He crowded her backward, forcing her to retreat until her back hit the freezing, rain-vibrating glass of the windows. He placed a hand flat against the glass beside her head, trapping her. "I have wealth beyond human comprehension. I have time unending. What I want... is you."
Harper’s heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The fear was still there, but beneath it, a dark, heavy coil of desire was tightening in her stomach. He was a monster wearing a billionaire's suit, yet the sheer, overwhelming wave of his attention was completely intoxicating.
"Me?" she whispered.
"Your submission," Julian clarified, his voice dropping to a seductive, hypnotic purr. His silver eyes darkened. "You belong to me. Mind, body, and soul. You yield to my power, and in exchange, the world will never be permitted to lay a finger on you again. You will be mine to protect. Mine to keep."
The sexual tension in the air was so thick it was suffocating. Harper looked up at his perfect lips, feeling the desperate urge to close the distance, to surrender her frantic, dangerous life to the terrifying safety of his shadows. She opened her mouth to accept the bargain.
Before a sound could escape her lips, the world exploded.
