Chapter 6
The Feral King
❧
The sound of the shattering glass and Harper’s disappearing form triggered a catastrophic, apocalyptic psychological break within Silas Vane.
The manic energy, the obsessive devotion, the cold clarity—all of it was instantly vaporized, replaced by an absolute, god-like, feral madness. The woman he worshipped, the child he had just discovered, had thrown themselves to their deaths to escape the monsters holding him.
Silas threw his head back and let out a roar that did not belong to this earth. It was a sound of such pure, unadulterated agony and rage that the floorboards of the gallery violently splintered.
The heavy silver chains, designed to suppress immortal magic, began to glow white-hot. But Silas didn't care about the pain. Driven by a feral, unhinged power that defied all magical laws, Silas flexed his arms.
With a deafening *CRACK*, the unbreakable silver chains shattered into a thousand pieces, embedding themselves into the walls of the gallery.
The two guards holding him didn't even have time to scream. Silas grabbed their heads and crushed their skulls like rotten fruit.
Lord Alaric stumbled backward, his cold eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing terror as he realized he had just unleashed a force of nature.
"Kill him!" Alaric screamed to his remaining men.
Silas didn't fight them. He slaughtered them. He moved as a blur of pure, bloody violence, tearing through the Syndicate assassins with his bare hands, ripping limbs and crushing chests, completely oblivious to their weapons. Within thirty seconds, the gallery was a charnel house.
Silas grabbed Lord Alaric by the throat, lifting him into the air.
"You took my world," Silas hissed, his face a mask of terrifying, demonic wrath. He didn't bother using his hands. He bit directly into Alaric's neck, tearing the Syndicate leader's throat out with his fangs, letting the body drop to the floor to rot.
Without pausing for a single second, Silas sprinted to the shattered window.
He didn't look down. He dove headfirst off the cliff into the howling, freezing darkness.
The wind rushed past him. His silver eyes pierced the gloom, scanning the churning black water below. He hit the freezing ocean with the force of a missile. The cold was shocking, but his immortal body ignored it. He kicked downward, desperately searching the dark water.
There.
Sinking slowly into the depths, Harper was clutching Leo tightly, her eyes closed, unconscious from the impact.
Silas swam with terrifying speed. He grabbed them both, wrapping his arms around their fragile, mortal bodies, and kicked upward with every ounce of his supernatural strength.
He broke the surface of the water, gasping for air. He swam to the rocky shore at the base of the cliff, hauling them out of the freezing surf.
He laid Harper on the jagged rocks. She was pale, her lips blue, not breathing. Leo was coughing, spitting up seawater, crying weakly, but his half-vampire resilience had kept him conscious.
"Harper," Silas begged, dropping to his knees. The feral king was gone, replaced by a desperate, weeping lover. He pressed his ear to her chest. Her heart was stuttering, failing.
Silas didn't hesitate. He bit into his own wrist, tearing a deep gash, and pressed his bleeding vein directly to Harper’s pale lips.
"Drink, my masterpiece," he pleaded, forcing the immortal, healing blood into her mouth. "Please. Do not leave me in the dark. Drink."
Seconds ticked by like agonizing hours.
Suddenly, Harper arched her back. She coughed violently, expelling seawater, and gasped for air. Her brown eyes flew open, wide and terrified, until they locked onto the tear-streaked, blood-soaked face of the vampire lord leaning over her.
"Silas?" she rasped, shivering violently.
"I am here," Silas wept, pulling her and Leo into his chest, burying his face in her wet hair. "I have you. You are safe. I swear on the stars, on the dark, on my very soul, I will never let anything touch either of you again."
Harper wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face against his cold, solid chest, holding Leo tightly between them. The plain artist and the unhinged monster, finally, irrevocably bound together in the dark.
