Chapter 3

The Crimson Lounge

The Rolls Royce glided through the city streets and pulled into a hidden underground parking garage beneath the financial district.
Cassian led Elliott to a private elevator that ascended directly into sensory overload. The elevator doors opened into The Crimson Lounge.
It was an ultra-exclusive, decadent underground nightclub. The lighting was a moody, blood-red glow. Pulsing, heavy bass thrummed through the floorboards. The crowd was a mix of terrifyingly beautiful people draped in velvet, leather, and diamonds. The scent of expensive alcohol, dark perfumes, and something metallic and sweet hung thick in the air.
"Welcome to my establishment," Cassian said, resting a protective, heavy hand on the small of Elliott's back as he guided him through the crowd.
Every head turned as they passed. Elliott, wearing his oversized cardigan and scuffed Converse, felt like a highly visible, awkward gazelle being paraded through a den of lions. He shrank against Cassian’s side.
The vampires in the club parted like the Red Sea. They bowed their heads, their eyes darting to Elliott with a mixture of hunger and absolute terror.
"Cassian, darling!" a stunning female vampire with platinum hair purred, stepping into their path. She trailed a manicured finger down Cassian’s lapel. "You haven't visited us in weeks. Who is your little... snack?"
Cassian’s hand tightened painfully on Elliott’s hip. He didn't raise his voice, but the sheer, oppressive malice that radiated from him made the platinum blonde flinch backward.
"He is not food, Seraphina," Cassian snarled, his fangs lengthening. "He is mine. If you look at him again, I will rip your heart out through your spine."
Seraphina swallowed hard, nodding frantically, and melted back into the crowd.
"You really need to work on your interpersonal communication skills," Elliott muttered, his heart racing. He was terrified, yes, but the way Cassian so violently claimed him sent a confusing, thrilling jolt straight to his cynical core. No one had ever protected him like that. No one had ever wanted him like that.
"They need to know their place," Cassian said darkly, ushering Elliott into a private, soundproofed VIP room at the back of the club.
The room was luxurious, filled with plush leather sofas and a massive mahogany table. Sitting in the center of the table, flanked by two armed vampire guards, was the 17th-century grimoire. Cassian had obviously sent someone to steal it while Elliott was distracted at the front desk.
"Sit," Cassian said, his tone softening instantly as he pulled out a chair for Elliott. "Read it."
Elliott dropped his backpack and sat, pulling out his translation notes. For the next three hours, they worked in the dim red light. Cassian poured them incredibly old scotch, pacing the room behind Elliott like a caged panther, his eyes constantly tracking the human's every movement.
As Elliott deciphered the ancient cuneiform and Latin script, a cold dread began to pool in his stomach.
"This isn't just a soul-binding spell," Elliott said, his voice trembling. He looked up, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Cassian... the collector who stole this from you in 1842. Was his name Malakor?"
Cassian stopped pacing. A terrifying stillness washed over him. "Lord Malakor is a rival of mine. A sadistic, power-hungry wretch. He stole the book to spite me."
"He didn't just steal it," Elliott breathed, turning the fragile parchment. "He booby-trapped it. The spell is designed to trigger upon the contact of an immortal and a mortal aura. It’s a parasitic curse."
"Parasitic?" Cassian demanded, crossing the room to stand behind Elliott, his hands gripping the back of the chair.
"It initiates a possession," Elliott read, his heart hammering against his ribs. "The immortal's soul is forced to bleed into the mortal vessel. It creates an overwhelming, unnatural obsession within the immortal... a desperate need to consume and protect the vessel until the possession is complete."
Cassian stepped back as if burned.
"It's not just a crush, Cassian," Elliott said, looking at the ancient vampire, a profound sadness settling over his rational mind. The fantasy was cracking. "Your soul is trying to take over my body. Your obsession with me... it’s just the magic trying to assimilate me. Once your soul completely bleeds over, my human consciousness will be erased. I'll die. And you'll be trapped in my body."
Cassian stared at him, his crimson eyes wide with a horrific realization. He looked at his own hands, trembling with the sheer, crushing weight of the magical compulsion driving him toward the human.
Suddenly, Elliott’s vision swam. The red light of the VIP room fractured. A searing, blinding pain split his skull.
Elliott collapsed forward over the table, his hands clutching his head.
"Elliott!" Cassian yelled.
When Elliott opened his mouth to scream, the sound that came out was not his own. It was a deep, guttural string of flawless, ancient Sumerian. His eyes rolled back, flashing with a violent violet light. The possession was accelerating.
