Chapter 6
Blood and Crown
❧
Sera stumbled out of the Vault and into the Crimson Hall.
The throne room was a slaughterhouse. Dozens of dismembered, ash-covered bodies littered the stone floor. The air was thick, suffocating with the copper stench of blood and the violent crackle of dark magic.
In the center of the hall, Kaelen was on his knees.
He was surrounded by a half-dozen of Malakor's elite assassins. A massive, heavily armored vampire—Malakor himself—stood before the prince, holding a wicked, serrated broadsword. Kaelen was covered in brutal wounds, his silver waistcoat shredded, his breathing shallow and ragged. He had fought like a demon, but the sheer numbers had overwhelmed him.
"A valiant effort, Prince," Malakor sneered, raising the broadsword. "But the girl is mine. And your head will serve as a fine warning to the rest of the Court."
"Kaelen!" Sera screamed, sprinting across the bloody floor.
Every head in the room snapped toward her.
Kaelen’s head whipped around, his crimson eyes widening in absolute, horrific terror. "Sera! No! Run!"
Malakor laughed, a cruel, grating sound. "Ah. The prize delivers herself. Grab her."
Two assassins lunged toward her. Sera didn't try to fight them. She didn't try to run. She sprinted directly past them, sliding to her knees on the blood-slicked stone right in front of Kaelen.
She grabbed his face, her hands smearing her own blood across his pale cheeks. He was trembling, staring at her as if she were a ghost, his mind unable to comprehend why she had abandoned the safety of the Vault.
"Drink," Sera ordered, her voice fierce, echoing through the cavernous hall.
Kaelen froze. "Sera... no... I won't take—"
"I am giving it to you!" she yelled, tears streaming down her face. She tilted her head back, exposing the long, pale column of her throat. She pressed herself against his chest, feeling the ragged beat of his failing heart. "I surrender, Kaelen! I am yours! Take it! Drink!"
The temptation he had fought for weeks, the absolute, intoxicating offer of her willing surrender, snapped the final threads of his restraint.
With a guttural, inhuman groan, Kaelen’s fangs fully descended. He wrapped his arms around her waist, crushing her to him, and buried his fangs deep into the sensitive flesh of her throat.
Sera gasped, her back arching as a sudden, sharp pain flared, instantly dissolving into a wave of overwhelming, euphoric heat. The sensation was paralyzing, entirely consuming. She felt her blood flowing out of her, pouring her life force, her absolute devotion, directly into the monster who worshipped her.
The reaction was apocalyptic.
Vampire lore spoke of the immense, catastrophic power generated by the willing blood of a bonded human, but few had ever witnessed it. As Kaelen drank, the wounds on his body literally stitched themselves shut in seconds. A shockwave of pure, telekinetic force exploded outward from their bodies.
Malakor and his assassins were thrown backward, crashing violently into the stone pillars of the Crimson Hall.
Kaelen pulled back from her throat, his crimson eyes glowing like miniature suns. His fangs were coated in her blood, his face a terrifying mask of renewed, god-like power. He stood up, gently placing Sera behind him, shielding her with his body.
"You touched what is mine," Kaelen’s voice echoed, no longer a murmur, but a terrifying, unnatural roar that shook the very foundations of the castle.
He moved faster than light. He didn't use a sword. He used his bare hands.
In less than ten seconds, the Crimson Hall was entirely silent. Malakor's assassins were reduced to piles of smoking ash. Malakor himself was pinned to the wall, Kaelen’s hand driven entirely through the warlord’s chest, crushing his black heart into dust.
Kaelen let the warlord's body fall to the floor.
He stood alone amidst the carnage, chest heaving, his dark hair falling over his glowing eyes. The battle was over. The estate was secure. The threat was annihilated.
Slowly, the terrifying, feral energy drained from his posture. He turned to face Sera. She was still sitting on the floor, clutching her bleeding throat, dizzy from the blood loss but entirely conscious.
Kaelen dropped to his knees before her. The god-like warrior vanished, replaced instantly by the terrified, reverent worshipper. He looked at the puncture wounds on her neck, his hands trembling violently as he reached out, hovering over the injury.
"What have I done?" Kaelen whispered, horror bleeding into his voice. The realization that he had finally hurt her, that he had given into the monster within, seemed to shatter him. "Serafina... I'm so sorry. I couldn't stop. You must hate me. You must be terrified of me."
Sera let out a soft, breathy laugh. She reached up, catching his trembling hand, and pressed his palm flat against her chest, right over her wildly beating heart.
"I am not terrified of you, Kaelen," she murmured, leaning forward. She reached up with her other hand, gently wiping a smear of her own blood from his pale lips. "I am terrified of a world without you."
Kaelen stared at her, his crimson eyes wide, completely uncomprehending.
"My family sold me," Sera said, her voice steady and resolute. "They threw me away. You tore the world apart to catch me. You are a monster, Kaelen. But you are *my* monster. And I am never leaving you."
The breath caught in Kaelen’s throat. A single, bloody tear slipped from his crimson eye. He leaned forward, burying his face in the crook of her neck, right beside the wounds he had inflicted, and wept. He wrapped his arms around her, holding her with a fierce, desperate gentleness, finally accepting the surrender he had craved since the moment he first saw her.
Sera rested her head against his dark hair, looking out over the ruined throne room of the Crimson Hall. She was no longer a disposable human scholar. She was the absolute, untouchable center of an immortal prince's universe.
She had been pulled into the dark, and she had found that she was entirely, beautifully at home in the velvet cage. And as the vampire prince held her against his healing chest, Serafina knew, with absolute certainty, that she would rule the monster, and the monster would rule the world for her.
