Chapter 1

The Gilded Cage

The first thing Serafina Vance registered was the suffocating weight of silk.
She gasped, her eyes flying open as she bolted upright. Her heart hammered a frantic, terrified rhythm against her ribs. This was not the drafty, threadbare room she occupied in her family’s remote country estate. She was surrounded by cascading layers of heavy crimson drapery, sitting atop a mattress so obscenely plush she felt as though she were sinking into a cloud of velvet.
Panic, sharp and visceral, flooded her veins. Memory returned in fragmented, violent flashes.
The carriage ride. Her father had insisted she travel by night to the capital, claiming a sudden scholarly appointment required her immediate presence. Then, the sickening crunch of wood. The screams of the horses. The carriage door being ripped from its iron hinges like wet parchment. Out of the swirling fog had stepped a shadow, a figure of terrifying, unnatural grace. He had not looked at the guards, who had already fled into the trees. He had looked only at her.
Sera pushed herself back against the tufted headboard, pulling the heavy crimson duvet up to her chin. The bedchamber was vast, illuminated by dozens of flickering beeswax candles set in wrought-iron candelabras. The walls were paneled in dark, rich mahogany, and the air was thick with the intoxicating, heavy scent of midnight-blooming jasmine and old paper.
It was a cage. A beautiful, opulent, impossible cage.
"You are awake."
The voice was a low, resonant murmur that seemed to vibrate directly against Sera’s spine. It did not come from the doorway, but from the deep shadows near the hearth.
Sera flinched, her breath catching in her throat. A figure stepped into the candlelight.
He was, without a doubt, the most terrifyingly beautiful creature she had ever seen. He possessed the ageless, predatory perfection of the Vampire Court. His skin was the color of alabaster, his cheekbones sharp enough to cut glass, and his hair fell in dark, silken waves around his face. He wore a meticulously tailored suit of midnight black, devoid of ornamentation, which only emphasized the lethal grace of his frame.
But it was his eyes that paralyzed her. They were a deep, mesmerizing crimson, glowing with an intensity that felt entirely too heavy, entirely too focused. They held a ravenous, uncompromising hunger, yet beneath it lay something far more dangerous: absolute, unwavering devotion.
"Who are you?" Sera demanded, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound brave. "Where have you taken me?"
"I am Prince Kaelen," he answered smoothly, his gaze tracing the lines of her face as if memorizing a holy text. "And you are in my private chambers, within the heart of the Vampire Court. You are safe here, Serafina. No harm will ever come to you again."
"Safe?" Sera let out a breathless, incredulous laugh. "You ripped the door off my carriage in the middle of the night. You abducted me! My family will—"
"Your family," Kaelen interrupted, his voice dropping an octave, a sudden edge of cold fury slicing through his calm demeanor, "will never lay eyes on you again. They have forfeited their right to you."
Sera stared at him, her scholarly mind racing to comprehend the nightmare she had been plunged into. Vampires did not abduct minor, impoverished noblewomen for ransom. They took humans for blood, for sport, or for slavery. She braced herself, waiting for the monster to bare his fangs, waiting for the inevitable, violent bite. She had always known her life was disposable—her father had made that clear every day she spent buried in the library instead of securing a wealthy husband. Now, it seemed, her worth had finally expired.
"Get it over with, then," she whispered, tilting her chin up in a final act of desperate defiance, exposing the pale skin of her throat. "If you are going to kill me, do not draw it out."
Kaelen froze. The crimson in his eyes flared, the pupils dilating until his eyes were almost entirely black. In a blur of motion too fast for the human eye to track, he crossed the vast expanse of the bedchamber.
Sera squeezed her eyes shut, her body bracing for the agony of his fangs.
Instead, she felt the mattress shift. A blast of unnatural cold washed over her skin. She waited. Seconds ticked by in agonizing silence. Slowly, hesitantly, she opened her eyes.
Prince Kaelen, the lethal, ancient heir to the most feared kingdom on the continent, was not leaning over her with bared fangs.
He was kneeling on the floor beside the bed.
He had lowered his head, his dark hair falling forward to obscure his face. He raised one pale, elegant hand, hovering it mere inches from the silk blanket covering her legs, as if terrified that touching her might break her.
"Kill you?" Kaelen whispered, the words ragged, as if the mere suggestion caused him physical pain. "I would burn the world to ash before I let a single hair on your head be harmed. You are the center of my universe, Serafina. You are my soul. I did not take you to destroy you. I took you to keep you."
He slowly lifted his head, his crimson eyes locking onto hers with a possessive, suffocating intensity that made the air in the room feel hopelessly thin.
"You are mine now," Kaelen murmured softly. "Forever."
